I have a 96 ex, , lsvtec, type r tranny. Tried 3 known good clusters, speedo will ONLY work when I nail on the car and get some wheel spin in first gear, I know it's odd. any ideas? As soon as i step on it , it works for a second then goes back to nothing, It only works when the wheels spin really fast

 

Pull the speed sensor, and check the teeth on it.

 

That's what im gunna do here as soon as i get a chance, it almost has to be the sensor

 

CEL codes?

 

No codes at all, Really a strange issue

 

Does the CEL work or did you check for codes using a code reader?

 

Yes , As far as I know. It turn's on and clicks of when I start the car like it's supposed to , And no I have not tried a code reader since it didnt throw the CEL on.

 

When you don't have a CEL code, the speedometer/cluster is a prime suspect, assuming the VSS gear is fine.

 

Im almost thinking the gear is the issue, I have tried 3 clusters , All of which worked fine before. Unless there is a wiring issue somewhere it almost has to be the gear, I guess im gunna have to pull the VSS and take a look

 

A wiring issue would throw a code, unless there's a poor connection between the VSS wire terminal in the cluster connector and the cluster. Start by removing and inspecting the VSS.
