Blown cat question.
I've been having nothing but problems with OE aftermarket cat's for my GSR.
I replaced one back in november and it recently the guts of the thing blew up. I noticed when I took it off that it's now completely hollow.
All of the pieces are scattered through the rest of the exhaust. It's still the OEM honda cat back system. My question is; is the rear section of the exhaust salvageable? or Is it easier to replace it entirely.
I've noticed drivability issues like it's plugged which made me suspect the cat but I assume now the muffler is plugged?
the only reason I'm asking is because i'm not familiar with this sort of thing happening.

Thanks for the tip.
I picked up another cat under warranty and installed it in the mean time. There was a definite improvement in the drivability through the rev range.
Old one

I had a scare when I went for a drive to break it in.
My wheel nuts were all loose on one wheel :s
I thought something was sticking until I pulled over and checked.

Yes you will need to replace the Cat-Back of the system.
i would just get a passive resonator installed after the cat and stright pipe the rest of the way.
should sound good with out sounding like a tin can full of pissed off bee's

thanks, I'll take that into consideration. I'm really not wanting something loud, I enjoy being able to rev it up every now and then but still stay under the radar. I was looking into the Yonaka system but I noticed it says specifically not for My gen GSR(only 00-01)
I've seen people using them but I would assume some custom fitting is required.
Ideally a apexi WS2 would be my choice but 700 dollars is up there. I'd have to save my pennys for that.
I called around and Stebro is available locally and said they could do a cusom install for $700 lifetime warranty. Never heard them on a acura before, but they said they do OEM or sport on request.
I noticed there is a small leak coming from the cat. I'm thinking it's because I didn't tighten the spring bolts enough. Can you overtighten those? I don't want to bend anything

nope the bolts only get so tight the spring is what hold the cat and header pipe together I tend to use Copper coat on the exhaust doughnut ther to help it seal if i reuse the old one. If its a new one it should have a coating that melts after a little while and seals it.

Update: I found the source of the leak.... Rust!! The OEM catback is toast, and not worth saving.
I decided against aftermarket OEM, for a couple of reasons I won't get into.
Ordered up a yonaka catback yesterday and picked it up earlier tonight.

Update. Ive been reading up on the differences between the 94-99 GSR's and it seems they have a longer resonator assembly because they have a shorter header and cat?
Is anybody able to confirm the exact differences in length between a LS catback and a typical 94-99 Gsr catback?
Now this exhaust i purchased was listed for 94-01 Gs/rs and not the Gsr. The guys at a local tuner shop assured me this would fit. Now I'm sceptical for obvious reason I just did online research stating the complete opposite. So what to do? Well I have he exhaust now so i pieced it together And lined it up to where my cat is currently sitting underneath my car.
A few guys online stated the LS system is 4" shorter. Here is a picture of the LS system next to my car lined up to my cat.
Looks pretty damn close to me doesn't it?

Visually it appears to sit virtually identical to he OEM catback system.
I changed the cat and front pipe with walker OEM when I purchased it.

94-01 RS/LS/GS/ITR and 00-01 GSR are all the same and interchangable
94-99 GSR has a shorter header collector and longer exhaust B-Pipe
If you have a 96 GSR, you will need an exhaust system for 94-99 2 dr GSRs. If the part # on your Yonaka exhaust is # YMCB002 it will not work with 96 GSR. **I dont see a catback system for 94-99 GSRs listed on Yonaka's website.
Or, you could keep that exhaust and get a header for RS/LS/GS/ITR/00-01 GSR.

Thanks man I appeciate the info.
Will I have problems with my cat if I ran a LS header? I've read the 94-99 GSR cat isnt the same.

Thanks. I just finished installing it a couple of hours ago.
I had a local shop I deal with through work weld me a 4 1/2" extention to the B-pipe.

It Bolted up perfectly in all of the factory hangers.
I'm very pleased with the results, it has a clean, deep tone, without the raspiness I hear on a lot of exhausts.
I will try and get a sound clip uploaded if anybody is interested.

4 1/2" exactly.
I was very impressed by quality of the welding work that was done. TIG welding is truly a art, I'd love to learn how to do it one day.

Uploaded a quick video using my phone.
warm start up, With light revs 2-4k RPM.
I'm working on getting a better quality camera to record this again.
I'll try and incorporate a drive by under full throttle.

Glad you got it figured out. But fair warning -- cats are not "wear" items if the car is running correctly, meaning they should last indefinitely. If your cat failed quickly it was probably fouled with either fuel or oil. It's a problem you should fix. A compression test would be a good place to start.

I'm going through the fuel injection system over the next few days. I have a leak coming from the bottom of the fuel pressure regulator. Not sure if it's just a weak clamp or the regulator it self. Also going to pull the injectors and replace all of the seals.
I replaced my Ignition coil last night.
It died as I was leaving work, fortunately I had a new one sitting on my back seat, as I suspected their might be a problem with it.
Swapped it out, car started right up. Definitely feels stronger now, Hoping that helps fix my rich fuel mixture I've been experiencing.
Checking Injectors over the next few days.
