Default How to check for defects transmission bearing? (not the comman ISB)

Hi all,

Today I jus disassambly my transmission off my single cam VTEC because I need to change out the ISB. On the same time i tried to rotate the top bearing on the counter shaft bearing( it has 2 bearings on the countershaft) . It feels like a bit lose and making a bit of whinning sound when its spinning. Do i need to change that too.?

Yes, that bearing is also common failure on Sohc transmissions. Usually both main shaft and the top countershaft bearing are failure prone. The bottom countershaft bearing can also walk out of the case, make sure to stake in in.

But Iam afraid that my local shop doesn't have tthe stock in hand. They have told me to jack out that bearing to check for the bearing code.
Today I just change my ISB Bearing, I taped in the new ISB bearing until it bottoms out. It looks like it's not straight compare to the old one. Do I need to remove it and reinstall again?

Just as a heads up most bearing shops can't get a lot of those bearings. I know I can't get diff bearings from anyone but Honda. They have an NTN number on the, but my local bearing shop can't order them, apparently they're made for Honda only.

If the bearing isn't straight remove it and drive it in again so it is.

Bottom countershaft bearing almost never goes bad (I have yet to see one) just make sure it's flush with the case and staked in place.

Also, to check bearings, pour a little motor oil in them and give them a spin. If they feel good and they're quiet they should be ok.

Better to check it clean and dry. Oil can mask problems it might have.

thanks for all the replies,
unfortunately, both my diff bearings are from nachi 6208ZZE same size as the old NTN one just that diffferent shape on the edge, nachi's has curve edge compare to ntn. I did a testing on one of my diff bearing by pouring mtf old while the bearing is still on the diff, spinned it and doesn't make any noise, but once i put it in the cluth housing and spin the diff, i can hear whinning noise. So at the end i changed both of the diff bearing.

For ISB bearing, the new one seems like didn't sit flush compare with the old one eventho it's alrdy bottom up. I try spinned it and it spin normally. Well gonna try it tomorrow after i assembly back and put it on my car to test it.

As for the mainshaft and countershaft bearing, I didn't change those because mainshaft bearing still in good condition and for the countershaft bearings, didnt have stock for the 2nd bearing and the one on clutch housing which is the needle bearing.
