Hey guys, got a 96 ex, lsvtec, type r trans. Past few days speedo has been jumping around, today it stopped working completley, all other gauges work fine, pulled the cluster everything looked fine , looked down at the vss and eveything seemed tight and connected. Any ideas? Faulty cluster? Never had this issue before. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

pull the vss out of the tranny and make sure there isn't broken or worn down gear teeth. you should have a cel for the speedo not working aswell

So I have a speedometer that works intermittently as well. I pulled the vss I believe it has the gear on it right? We cleaned it and checked it. No sign of wear or anything. Havent had time to go through the test procedure found in a repair manual yet. Is there anything else that could be wrong? Not sure where I would find a cluster as no junkyards around have any 96's left. Any help would be appreciated!

How much for a cluster? I as well have been having this very problem! Is the cluster from a 95 lx the same as a 96? I have a 95 lx auto, and my speedo works when it wants but I also have a bad RPM gauge.. I have checked the VSS and it looked to be fine, the harness was not corroded and the gear inside looks fine.

Okay guys i tried 3 different clusters, still nothing, also no CEL. When I stomp on the car in first and get some wheel spin the speedo will shoot up quick , ANY ideas?
Hi guys I have to same problem too!?, I have an Ex 4dr and suddenly the speedo just stopped working? And the check engine light came on. The tach works, the engine works(never stopped) no burnt smells or smoke, cluster lights work, fuel gauge works...
What should I check, clean, repair or replace?
Thank you...

Speedo not working is either speed sensor, wires/traces corroding or stepper motors on the cluster itself.
smartest option is to troubleshoot like the thread starter was doing. physically check the speed sensor. then meter the VSS wire for your cluster see if you're getting signal.
then if you are and all checks out either replace with junkyard cluster. or send out to a repair center.

Don't bump old threads. Start your own.
What year is your car. Do you have a multimeter? Check your fuses under your dash. I don't remember the number but it's either 10amp or 15 amp fuse. Do your odometer and trip meter work?
Sounds a lot like fuse 15. Wires behind the engine short out and cause one or all of these symptoms:
Fuse 15 under the dash (7.5 amps) is blown.
Speedometer stays at zero, odometer does not roll.
CEL on with codes for VSS, both O2 sensor heaters, and purge solenoid.
Varying output from alternator (lights may flicker).
