Default OT: Back from Key West

Well, not just now. Bef and I got back to RDU about 2:15 this afternoon. Very tired right about now, but the trip back wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Key stats:

Total miles driven: 1929.5
Stage 1 miles/avg mph: 396.5/65.8
Stage 2 miles/avg mph: 570/51.8
(return trip)
Stage 3 miles/avg mph: 700/60.9
Stage 4 miles/avg mph: 265/62.4

The last/first 160 miles between Key West and Miami sucks ***. Great scenery for the most part, but damn it takes a long time. And the fact that south FL folk can't drive for **** doesn't help. Only had four ignorant incidents on the entire trip, and all occurred south of Orlando. Three were tractor-trailer either cutting me off (badly) or trying to merge while I was beside them, and the last one was some crazy hosebeast that freaked the hell out when I merged 150 feet in front of her - she locked her brakes up, then yelled at me in the toll lane

Weapon of choice was a rented 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE. Two words - NO *****. Comfortable seats, but good Lord was that thing slow

Interesting car sightings:
- 1920's or 1930's Mercedes convertible. Bad ***. Bef wouldn't let me slow down and take a picture
- Truck full of 2003 4Runners
- 11 New Beetle convertibles in a row
- New-model Viper driven by a Miami Dolphin
- Flock of Miatas (20+) on their way down to the Keys

ITR-related content:
- Almost 2000 miles, and I didn't see a single one

Pat, who is going to bed now

I drove my ITR to Key West and back from MI for spring break. You are right, that last stretch of road sucks.

You were probably going North when I was going South.

RE S. Florida drivers... it ain't the natives that's the problem, it's all them damn Yankees been importing themselves for the last 50 years or so. But seriously, the insanity level of some of the people down here is pretty high.

The sunsets were indeed killer. I was down there for my cousin's wedding, and the reception was on the dock behind the Hyatt Key West, right near there. I got some great shots:

I waited too long to book a flight - would have been over $900 to fly Bef and me down there

The drive was actually quite easy. Speed limit was 70 for about 3/4 of the way. The only bad part was driving The Turd, our Dodge Intrepid rental:

If the foreground of this one had been a little lighter, this would have been great. There's a guy out on a Jet Ski and two people in chairs on the dock:

I'm happy with this one, too.
