Default 98 civic thermostat

how bad would it be to run with an open thermostat( take it out ) , i dont think its opening and my temp gauge dont work ? i know its not opening due to the lower radiator hose not having any coolant in it or even heating up

Why not just replace it?

Run without the thermostat for a few careful drives just to see if the lower hose gets some coolant. The job for the thermostat is to open up and allow coolant to flow WHEN NECESSARY. It's like pouring boiling water through a hose onto your face and you can't say when to stop; with the thermostat; it's your engines voice to say when to stop or go. It's only up to $40 to get a new one and a very simple thing to replace it. If you need a part; spend the money on the necessary part and don't go off buying some little aesthetic. Performance and Function > Aesthetic and Form

You can damage the engine by running without a thermostat. The thermostat not only regulates coolant flow through the radiator but also maintains a slow rate of coolant flow through the engine. There's better heat transfer from the hot engine to the coolant if the coolant is moving slowly.

Running with no thermostat is the most ridiculous thing a've ever heard.

Your engine gets slower to its operating temp. in the summer, and in the winter cannot reach it at all.

Also with open thermostat in the summer your cooling system is under stress and your fan works more often.

Honda (and all cars) have put thermostat on purpose.
You cannot be smarter than them, and obviously you're not! :-D

Why don't you replace the sending unit under the dizzy for the gauge, cheap part and just need a socket wrench, see if you can the gauge working.

Thermostat is cheap, get 170 degree one get a honda one, if really want to save money get an aftermarket one at least.

He won't know whether the temp gauge works or not until a thermostat is installed.
