Default Buying a car that needs an ecu...help?

I'm looking at buying a 2000 ex ek coupe. The owner converted it from auto to 5 speed, he just swapped tranny, but left the auto ecu in it and is saying it runs but there's a check engine light on due to the auto ecu. I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to ecu's. Need to know what I will need to get or do to make the ecu work, do i need a whole new ecu? or is something able to be done to the auto ecu to make it work? and any idea on how much I'm looking at to fix this? the engine is the stock d16y8, just need to know before i bight off more than i can chew, thanks alot

You`ll need what I think is the p2p 5 speed ecu. Your looking between $50 to about $150 depending on where you find it. Correct me if I`m wrong

Is running the auto ecu hurting the car? Or losing power or anything? I dont understand how it even runs off a auto ecu if its 5 spd

have him buy the 99-00 ex 5 speed ecu from a local junk yard or online, such as ebay, for around $50. Have him install it(literally 1 minute of work to take the 10mm bolts out and reconnect the plugs.)

Make sure he has a code scanner. Clear all codes, drive around until all sensors/codes show ready and see if any CEL comes on.

I would not buy it from him without knowing what else could be wrong.

If you can aquire the vehicle for a great deal,
add in the cost of the ecu,
and if this total value does not make the vehicle a bad deal, then go with it.

For the right price i would say go for it. But like InTheZone said make sure there is the correct ecu there and a scanner to make sure thats the only issue with the car. Also make sure everything still works, reverse lights, cruise control, things of that nature. I know when i did the auto to manual swap on my DA i didnt get all of those things hooked up when i first did the swap so it would be something good to check.
