Default Oil starvation - First was the GT3076R, now the Laskey built bottom end...

I sure hate to make posts like these but all things considered I'm in good spirits. Back in 2007 I built my 99' DC2 and went all in on the build. 5yrs and 18k hard miles later I lost my laskey racing built bottom end to oil starvation of which I still haven't identified.

Some may remember my RIP GT3076R post. I got a new CHRA and dropped the oil pan. Cleaned out two flakes of shavings and a ball bearing from the turbo that was resting in the pan. Tested the oil feed line and moved on. Everything seemed great. A/F with the new CHRA was good. Car ran great for week and a half daily driving to work.

Well yesterday I ran into my neighbor coming home for lunch in his C4 big block vette. First time I really took it to 9000 rpm in 3rd and 4th with the new CHRA. Well it freight trained the vette but when I pulled up to talk afterwords I noticed a slight knock.

I let it sit for the afternoon and when I started it after work the knock was horrible for 1-2 sec then it was fine. I hit the gas to check oil pressure and next thing you know it's making 8bar (roughly 120psi)!

There has to be some serious blockage somewhere for that to happen. Whatever took the turbo is still lurking. I'm assuming it blocked the journals and killed a rod bearing. Hopefully not the mains...

Pulling the engine this weekend to ship the bottom back to Mike@Laskey Racing for a rebuild. I'm at 84mm already so hopefully there isn't to much wear on the walls.

I suspect my oil cooler lines but can't say until I remove the bumper to get at the cooler. I think I read a thread long ago where someone built up sludge in the lines over time and something similar happened. Just a guess but I'll be inspecting as I tare it down.

Right now I'm the proud owner of a 99' DC2 and 00' AP1 both with spun bearings. My peers feel I'm crazy for not throwing in the towel at this point but I'm coming back for more!

Hopefully you caught it before you spun any bearings. Best case youll need new bearings and have the crank turned. Worse case youll need new bearings, crank and rods.

This the best approach if you spun a bearing.

OP,

GL and props for staying in the game.

OP, good luck with the rebuild sounds like a pretty nasty car!

Let's talk about the oil cooler a bit. Give me a detailed description of the oil cooler setup. Specifically, if there was a oil thermostat on either the sandwich plate or a separate device. That was my issue at first as well, and starved the bottom end (slightly). Changed bearings, and went back to driving when I removed the cooler. This time I got a MOCAL sandwich with an internal thermostat. In addition, need to know what size oil lines that you used for the cooler also.

It's a fun daily driver. Catches a lot of V8s by surprise.

TheShodan,

Setrab oil cooler with -10AN in/out. Using a MOCAL sandwich with internal thermo.

I'll get the part numbers once I get everything tore apart and easier to access. The cooler wasn't mounted in an optimal place (driver side in front of condenser). AC condenser and intercooler makes for a tight area. Airflow sucked I'm sure because of the usdm bumper not having a grill like the jdm. I'll take some pics once the bumper is off before I pull the engine. It took two long runs of -10AN hose to make the connection from front to rear going over the tranny.

My fear is it's a main bearing. The knock was not there on the way to work. On the way home after the hard kick it showed up ever so slightly. Car got shut down pretty soon afterwords and had good oil pressure before going down.

I let it sit for 4-5hrs. Started it once I got home to check oil pressure and I got a VERY loud knock knock knock knock while it built oil pressure then it went away. I bliped the throttle and noticed it shot up past the normal 5.5bar I see when cold or cooled. It went up to almost 8bar and I turned it off immediately and thought to myself holy ****...

I read a few posts where people said that if you get a loud knock when cold that goes away it's probably the main bearings... I just hope it's a rod bearing and not a main... It's going to suck to pay to ship a engine across the country to be told it's a boat anchor.

keep your head up man, sounds like a blockage issue for sure, i would pull everything apart and clean it all cooler, lines, turbo, everything. then run some atf through everything to help clean because of its high detergent content. who knows u could have a piece of the old chra or something just blocking a passage. a bb in a feed line would reak havoc for sure.

Setrab oil cooler had fresh clean oil dripping out the lines when I disconnected them. So much for that idea. Going to buy an engine stand and get the transmission and cylinder head off tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have the bottom end in a rubber maid tote headed to Irvine, CA on Friday.
