Default $164 + Tax for Valve adjustment?

Cheapest i found for a valve adjustment in Valley Stream NY. Hillside Honda quoted $212 + Tax. Anyone knows any where in Queens/Brooklyn area that will do the adjustment for any less? Also When you adjust your valves you also get new gaskets? My Zip Code is 11422 and hang around 11423

You can get a 10mm wrench and a set of feeler gauges for like $12, just man up and do it.

^ This. You can find the jam nut adjustment tool on eBay for $15, and feeler gauges for less than $10. Do some quick reading on how to do it and you should be able to do it yourself if you're worried about the money. I would suggest doing the whole thing twice so you get a little more used to the "feel" of feeler gauges and can get it right.

$164 really does not sound that bad. The mechanic is going to bill for how long the job is suppose to take versus how long it actually took. The other option is to do it yourself as others has suggested.

also, I would not be driving around to shops looking for the cheapest price. at some point, you will regret making that decision. If you cant do the work yourself, find a mechanic you trust and stick with him and pay him what he wants.

cheaping out on small details like this can and sometimes will end very bad for you.

$164 sounds a little bit high, because it's a 1hr job ($75-$100 per/hr) + the VC gasket & sparkplug tube seals ($30-$40).

In the faqs section they have a write up on doing them yourself. It's simple and a few dollars for tools... But if you enjoy working on your car. This is a good way to do it. I will say this tho, you will have to proly replace the valve cover gasket once you take it off. It's not expensive but just something that needs to be done.

The sales tax is on the parts. There are some states that charge sales tax on labor though, Wisconsin is one.

What does price have to do with the length of the job? He is paying for a service, not a time slot. Labor guides do not dictate pricing. A quality shop can charge whatever they wish and customers in the know will pay.

Shopping for the cheapest price is the wrong route. Do you want the cheapest backyard hack working on your ****? You want to shop around for quality. Ask around,do internet searches. When you find a shop you feel comfortable with, pay their price and be done with it. You can do it yourself, but if you are not mechanically inclined, you can easily **** your head up as well....

Did it myself whiles i was at it changed spark cap rotor ect... Apparently it had a tune up before since sparks wasnt original but fowled badly guess do to crappy gas from previous owner. Valves werent to hard to do it was really slack slack tho. On top of that apparently the VC gasket was leaking around the Cap so another problem fixed. Plus side she doesnt bog at slow speeds no more and i have a peace of mind that shes pretty refreshed. 68k no pictures since i was to preoccupied no screwing up my valves.
