Default Automatic trans, but need to shift?

Hey all, I wanted to quickly survey all of your knowledge with respect to this issue-

My 92 Accord has an automatic transmission, but you need to manually start it in 2 and then shift up to D3 as you drive, and shift back down to 2 after.
My uncle has 30 years of experience as a mechanic and said that lots of Honda guys do this to their cars, disconnect something so that the shifting is in their hands and not the automatic transmissions.

Have you guys heard of this?
The guy I bought it from replaced the engine and did lots of other **** including this. My uncle said it was a common modification and doesn't do anything bad

Are there any codes?
You will need to find out what is missing or not hooked up correctly. Currently if your transmission is in safe mode it is only using one or two gears out of four. You would not drive a manual transmission only using a single gear. As for damage, if the transmission is unable to shift you are either unnecessarily loading/lugging the engine or over revving it. Your acceleration and gas mileage is suffering.
