do i need a spring compressor to install my coilovers?
yeah if you still got the stock springs on then you'll need a spring compressor.
but there is a way to do it with out the spring compressor.... i dont think i wanna tell you because its not so safe

no u dont
i take off stock springs w/o a compressor easily..it doesnt pop far..just be careful. i stand on the coil area. it doesnt launch anywhere if u do it carefully

Get an Impact wrench and shoot the shock out of the Spring by undoing the retaining nut. Really doesn't shoot that far and is pretty easy with Impact wrench. Just do it in an area where you can see where the retaining nuts shoots off. Search around and you will find some detailed instructions on how to do this. Don't try doing it off of my little short summary.

Basically a powerful air wrench hooked up to an air compressor. It spins fast enough that the threads won't strip when the shock tries to pop out on the last few threads and is safer than doing it by hand. Let me look and see if I can find some old topics
If you haven't done it before.... maybe. Depends how mechanically aware you are. Might just wanna wait until you have some help or someone who has done it before to aid you. By the way here is a thread for install help. Read through most of it, you will see a couple of methods but I found the way using the Impact wrench is definitely cheapest and best.
For the hell of it I tried Jeff S method of having it decompress itself- long story short, didnt work as planned more pain than using the impact wrench.

u can do it yourself just lay the shock/spring assembly on the ground
stand on the spring, and slowly undo the top bolt with a wrench and a allen key ..its not gonna pop crazy far if u stand on it.put a bucket at the end if u r scared.

Yeah like JaeOne said- it's not gonna be amazing popping out of the shock, I was honestly disappointed after hearing warnings of it "shooting out", I was expecting something more... As far as putting the coilovers on, check whatever instructions came with them, you will more than likely have to cut the bumpstops and dust shields as well as apply any other parts that came with coilovers to replace OEM parts i.e. insulators for hat, sleeves, etc.
