Default The Truth about Daily Driven Turbo Hondas...

I'm currently working on turbocharging my f22a cb7. Here's my build:

http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=179811

My question is how reliable can my setup be? As you can see it is my daily driver aka I drive it EVERYDAY. I stopped the build last year because of negative feedback about my car not being reliable turbocharged, but always hear of people doing it for years with minimal to no problems at all. In fact one of my former classmates seems to be having success with his stock block street tuned LS setup (although it has only been a few months). Basically I would like to hear from those with personal experience in this area especially tuners, preferably turbogixxer aka Kenny as I have decided to allow him to tune my setup if possible.

If you can put a check mark next to these three things you have nothing to worry about

1. Healthy Motor
2. Quality Parts
3. Tuned by reputable tuner

The truth is...its easy to daily drive a car that makes 125hp @ 5500rpm's on the street. Be warned though, **** does tend to break on high hp cars that could leave you stranded compared to an otherwise stock vehicle for daily driving.

Well my engine seems to be healthy I did a compression test a few months back and it was 180 across the board (178 for cylinder #4). I recently installed a new valve cover gasket kit and plan to change the rear main seal due to leakage. Now as far as my parts list goes I try to at least make sure I get quality parts whr it really counts i.e. wastegate, bov, tuning software, and a good tuner (turbogixxer aka kenny, I heard good things. Also his youtube video looks pretty legit lol).

If your hitting the rev limiter every opening you get then your going to break something sooner. If your worried about it breaking down then it's probably not a good idea for you. The way I look at it is I drive it the way I want to, which I am pretty casual with it most of the time but if I break something when I'm driving hard then I really don't care because I'm going to fix it and keep on driving it. If you can't afford to fix it or don't know how then you need to have another car for a dd.

I run 10psi daily and sometimes 14psi on my bone stock F22B2. Been boosted for about 12k miles now and it's been great so far. And I'll tell you that I'm only that brave because I have 2 spare motors in case something goes wrong. Chances are at 8psi, once you get past the initial "HOLY **** RACECAR" feeling and boosting everywhere, it'll be fine for years to come. Tuning is key. Also, be sure to keep up with maintenance and change oil more frequently.

Well I'm pretty easy on my car as is so I doubt I'll be to hard on the turbo setup. I pretty much baby my car lol I rarely go wot even when racing. With that said, I wanted my setup to be a 3k+ turbo spool up therefore I'm not always in boost so when I'm just driving normal it will be as if it were a stock engine.

Your turbo will only spool when enough air is going through the exhaust, so you can be at 4000rpm and still in vacuum as long as you don't push down the gas too far.

Yea well I too have another engine (JDM H22), but just wanted to experience boost and would rather do it with my f22a. If it does fail sooner than later I'll just swap in the H22. Still, I would like too at least enjoy this turbo for a year lol

it will be as reliable as you make it. beat the **** out of it every day and never change the oil and your bound to have problems. of course anytime you do anything to change a motor away from being bone stock you loose reliability especially with the complications of a turbo kit there is alot more parts that could go bad.

dont raise the rev limiter, i have mine set at 8300. i do bounce off the rev limiter but thats what its there for lol. i also have a second car so if i do hurt it i can park it and fix it but i have no problems driving a couple hours to beat the **** out of my car all day on the track and then driving a couple hours home. use common sense, it'll take u a long way.

It's good for basic engine management. It lacks more in depth features though, and is often buggy. I'm tuned on it/tune with it. For a setup as simple as yours it should do just fine.
