I bought a 2000 civic and it throws the code P1457.

The gas cap isn't the problem, I've tried 3 different ones (also, I can hear the air release when I loosen the cap).

I've also been down the road with trying to not overfill the gas tank...that doesn't help either.

I'm wondering how to troubleshoot the EVAP problem. I have access to a wrecked 2000 civic and I can change out some parts.

What are your thoughts?

Probable cause
1.Loose fuel cap.
2.Vapor canister saturated
3.Failed vent solenoid
4.Failed purge solenoid

Start off by resetting the ECU and see if the code returns. If it does, EVAP problems can be...interesting to diagnose, to say the least. Since you have a parts car, it would probably be easier to just start replacing parts one by one instead of trying to actually diagnose the problem. If resetting the ECU solves it, you're golden. If it doesn't, read on.

First thing to replace is the gas cap. You've already done that. Second thing to replace is the EVAP parts near the gas tank. Jack up the back of the car, and look near the driver side rear wheel, on the front bottom of the gas tank. There should be two small valves there. Pull them off the parts car, and slap them on your car. Reset the ECU, and see if that solves the problem.
