Default Help with code p1457, 2000 Honda Civic EX

This code is driving me crazy! As well as some others, never seen this code before.. and the first thing i saw was a vent shut valve which i got at work so I figured id try changing the canister vent shut valve and the gas cap, reset the CEL and the light came back on. What else could it be? I heard check the canister vent solenoid but I cant even find where that is on my car nor do I know how what diagnostic to run on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A quick google of this code brings up a page from hond-tech with people who had the same issue. I'm not telling you to post in that thread or anything but to read through it.

It's just an evap leak. Don't just go replacing stuff because you could have an evap leak ANYWHERE in the evaporative emissions system. Have a shop with a smoke machine pinpoint the leak. It could be something as simple as a faulty gas cap, or a bad vent/purge vsv. Unless you have a sure fire way to diagnose it yourself, you WILL end up wasting more money trying to figure it out than having a shop just smoke it real quick. Since it is a p1457 not a p1456, it is most likely a frozen evap canister vent shut valve (very common problem), but don't just assume. If so, it is a very cheap fix and you may want to have them just replace it as the 2 small screws holding the valve in tend to be a huge pain to get out if they are corroded, which they most likely will be since corrosion is typically the cause of this part's failure.

Thanks for the replys.

cyhm, I have smoke tested my system and found no leaks sadly... the local honda dealership here charges $135 an hour and to me thats ridiculous. I checked out the forums and saw that everyone says its the canister shut off valve. So I had one at work and I thought it was weird because useually we have to order.. but nope had the right part number etc. Changed the canister vent shut valve and you're right. those two screws are a pain in the butt had to use the die grinder to make new heads then they removed easily. Drove for about 4 hours and the code came back on again.

I dont want to spend lots of money. I've smoke tested and they said no system leaks found but I seriously think they didnt do it right if there wasnt a leak... because obviously there is. Im just scared of it being my ECM. What would you suggest the next step be? Any way of testing all of these and which would you replace first..?

p1456, is tank side correct?
p1457, is evap charcoal canister side (located under hood on right in my 2000 Honda Civic EX)? Is there any way issues from tank side would also throw p1457?

@Tony, thanks for the reply.

I did notice there were tons of these but it seems like no one ever updated on what the problem actually was. That and all the cars evaps were setup different, i noticed they decided to move the evap canister from under the car to under the hood.. all the diagrams ive been looking at for the evap system are weird, doesnt show where major components are solenoids etc.. and last one I saw was 2010. So why not update?

I have a 2000 Honda Civic LX, 230500 miles. It has been in the family since it was purchased new and is in great shape. I do most of the repair work on it myself. I agree that this P1457 CEL code is pesky. I have been dealing with it for over a year when I had to replace the gas tank because it rusted out. I immediately started to get P1456 CEL codes so I retraced my repair and found that I didn’t attach a vacuum line to the gas tank. Problem fixed, but I started to get a P1457 CEL code that wouldn’t go away. I really appreciated the diagrams showing the EVAP system and it educated me on the components and how they work.
i replaced the EVAP canister and the solenoid attached to it and kept getting the P1457 CEL code. I even sealed around the solenoid with RTV thinking that maybe the seal on the case was leaking, but that has no effect.
After months of the annoying CEL light in the dash being on, I took the gas cap off and ran the car without the gas cap, not expecting to correct the problem because the gas cap is not supposed to affect the P1457 CEL code. When I first removed the gas cap I got the familiär hiss of pressure being released. Running without the gas cap didn’t trigger any CEL light…not sure why. I bought a new OEM Honda gas cap and put it on. It is much tighter than the old gas cap and so far no CELs have been triggered. That is my addition to this thread on this frustrating problem.
