91 EF overheating...fan wont come on
my friend's '91 DX hatchback (150k miles) is overheating. the fan wont come on, and the coolant in the reservoir started boiling.
any idea what the problem could be? relay or fuse maybe?
thx in advance!

check the fuse
unplug and run the fan direct to the battery to eliminate the fan motor
then you have the thermo switch, thats what turns the fan on when the coolant reaches temp
and the realy but its usaly the thermo switch

i went through 3 relays before i got one to work for my cooling fan.
1. check the fuse.
2. then the fan itself.
3. then the relay.
the relay is easy to test as you just connect the 2 wires coming off the thermo switch together. once that is done, put your ignition to the II position and the fan should kick on.
if the fan works for all 3 of those steps and still doesn't come on, then the thermo switch is bad.

<--Has his fan hooked up directly to the ignition switch. When the car is on..so is the fan. Haven't overheated once; plus, my turbo inlet piping is constantly supplied with a nice flow of air.
