Post 00 EX - where do I buy an inexpensive replacement engine?

I should start this with the announcement that I am new to the forum, and I am in need of not just a little help... I think I need a lot of help!!

Here's the scoop... I blew the motor in my Civic (not exactly sure what I did to the motor, but anyone and everyone that I talk to about it says that replacing the engine is my only option if I want to drive it again). I am just now in a position to replace the block, but I don't know where to start looking to get a new engine... I want to do all my own wrench turning, which hopefully helps with the price, but that doesn't help with the parts!

Does anyone know of a reliable place to start a search?

I'm not looking for a DOHC vtec, but I wont turn one down if the price is right! I need to get back into this as a daily driver.

Please help!!

Okay you need to figure this out mostly yourself, but start with whats your budget, how long can it be down, and whats avaliable and go from there. Then do searching on what to do and use the marketplace here or craigslist to find parts.

But for you I'll make it easy and do a list easiest to hardest

1.Replace your motor with the same one D16y8
2.B18b1/b20 Swap
3.GSR swap

If your just starting I would just find another d16y8 and drop it in there. Theres nothing to it honestly.

Oh and reliable place to start a search would be the search function at the top of the page :p

What do you mean blow your engine? Throw a rod, bent valve? Look for a Y7 block on craigslist if you just need a block they are essentially the same block as the one in your car now.

When you say replace the block, did you blow a hole in the block and you're looking to rebuild it with a new bottom end / same head, or are you saying "block" meaning long block (full engine minus accessories, etc)?

If you're just looking to take your motor out and drop in a new one to DD, I'd follow the advice above and get another y8. That way it's just unplugging everything, pulling the motor, then dropping the new one in and plugging it back in (over simplified but more or less what you need to do). There should be plenty around from people swapping in B series or other motors.

Local junk yard, Craigslist are the cheapest.

^I agree. My suggestion about the block may be a good alternative if you can't find a whole Y8 due to the issue of finding one in good shape. The Y7 is swapped out much more often for some other engine and can usually be found cheap and in abundance.

That part.

I was on the freeway, car started to shudder. When I pulled over and turned the radio off, the motor was making a terrible sound. When I looked under my car, half the oil was already on the ground. The car has been sitting for just over a year now, and I can finally afford to breathe life back into my car!

That's the gist of it... here's what I wanna know though:

the 00 ex that I have, is that a SOHC vtec? I should be able to find out based on the VIN right?
Is there a difference in size, or could I do a direct swap if I got my hands on a DOHV vtec?
I would like to mod it a little, I don't want nos or anything crazy, but I think eventually I'd like to put a turbo on it, what long block should I look for to be able to go in that direction in the future?

As you can tell, I'm mod (or tune, I'm not sure the verbiage) illiterate! But, I have goals!
