Super Loud Clunking Noise from Axle after Knuckle Replacement
We just finished converting to DC front brakes on our 00 civic CX. The brakes turned out fine but we are now experiencing an extremely loud clunking noise from the driver's side axle.
The thread on the axle was stripped where the axle nut threads onto so we just forced it on but we could not get it 100% on. There is still about 1/4" left and we cannot get the axle all the way through the hub but the nut is extremely tight. Now we hear a loud sound from the hub as well as the tranny side almost like something is loose inside the transmission. What would be causing this? will a simple axle replacement fix the problem or will it require a bearing as well? sound corresponds to speed of car but does not make any sound when reversing.

same scenario
It may be tight, but when you drive the car you are talking about a lot of force on the axle... You should have replaced the axle... If a bolt is stripped you replace it.....

Okay will be replacing the axle this week. How can i determine when the axle is removed if it is the hub? I want to make sure its not the wheel bearing or damaged hub once i pull the axle out.
Make sure the hub spins freely and it doesn't have alot of freeplay like side to side or up and down. Damage to the inside of the hub should be visible (like damaged splines or excessive wear). You won't be able to see any damage on the outer hub until its pressed out of the wheel bearing.
Pulled the axle out. We're picking up a new axle tomorrow. Question though? I removed the knuckle and when i spin the hub there is a grinding sound. Does that mean the bearing is bad?

Okay then. Im going to have a shop look at it tomorrow. Its weird though cus our old knuckles had no noise at all and it also makes that sound when I spin it.
Could the inner joint maybe have become disconnected on the inside (in the boot)? I know a lot of the time if you can't get it lined up just right, it seems like it would never fit right.
