Default Speedo problems

Ive got a 1997 ek hatch and the speedo does not work. It erratically bonuses up and down and the mileage is not going up. But the temp gauge and gas gauge seem to be fine. I've heard it could be the speed sensor (vss). If its not that should I junk the tach and get a new one? But if it is the vss where is it located and what is it going to cost me.

There is no check engine light from what I see. I just bought the car but for all I know the guy ripped it out. This is my first ek and don't know much about them. I'll check in the morning if the fuse is blown and if it is I've herd it could be a short underneath the intake manifold.

If you turn the key from off to ON(II), does the CEL turn on and then off after 2 seconds?

Another thing I can't get my finger on is the car bucks bad when driving. It's got a d16y7 and it sometimes idles high and sometimes it surges. I don't know how high it's idling because the car doesn't have a rpm guage. Now I've heard that that is caused by the idle air control valve. Do you think I should take it off and clean it? What should I do to go about doing so. Sorry for all the questions I just bought the car and I'm trying to get it back on the road.

I would check but the car is at my dads house. So if i turn the car from of to on ( one turn) the check engine light should come on and if it doesn't the dude ripped it out

..or the bulb is burned out. Hook up a code reader if the CEL doesn't work.

Thanks I will. Luckily my step brother has a code reader so I can hopefully have another problem out of the way. Do you have an opinion on why my car may buck and idle funky?

No CEL on your clutch, can't find the VSS...you sir, need to do a lot more reading before you start turning a wrench.

VSS, looks like a black pen coil, top of the transmission, near the bell housing, near the firewall. Two bolts holding it on, two-pin plug.

My speedo works occasionally after I pull the fuse and put it back in so would it be the vss. And when it does work its 10 mph fast.
