Hey guys, can a p75 ecu be chipped and used for vtec?

 

You didn't even try and look for this answer. Which P75 are you talking about? There's an OBD1 and an OBD2. One can and one cannot. I swear the H-T community gets more and more helpless everyday.

Ok, I accept my 50 lashes Grumblemarc! I did try some searches but my issue is I dont even know what my ecu is. Theres no sticker or anything on it. I pulled the cover off of it yesterday and I saw a p75 on the serial number. I have a jumper harness so I'm guessing its an obd2. I am new to learning about cars in general and know nothing about this portion of it. All I know is that I want the vtec portion of my ls to work! I thought about buying a chipped p28 but I'm not sure if this jumper harness will just plug in or not! definetely dont wanna get into re wiring anything if possible.

you sir are the linkmaster, I applaud you! I honestly didnt check the faq section, I did however spend the last hour googling and found all kinds of posts and all I learned was that I would prolly have to convert to a p72. I will check those links now thx

ya thats what i found out also, problem is mine is obd2, all the info i found doesnt say how to decipher between obd1 p75 and obd2 p75. However, I have a jumper harness which means its obd2 converted to obd1 for the ls motor, right? Which also means im screwed, right?

There is a picture so you can tell what you have just by the visual differences.

And why is it running a jumper harness then if it's OBD2? What car are we even talking about?

 

its a b18b1 bottom with a b16 head in a 99 civic sedan

 

If you cannot ID the ECU then post some pics. To re-answer your question. Only OBD1 ECUs can be chipped and converted (apparently) to run VTEC.

 

Ok, I was just going by what the guy said when he did the wiring. Maybe I got it confused. I just went and pulled out the ecu and according to the pics the ecu is obd1.
Maybe the motor requires obd2 so the jumper harness converts from obd1 to obd2 not the other way around. This is all very confusing for me!

 

If it's OBD1 with a jumper harness (OBD2b to OBD1) then you're in good shape. Just convert it to VTEC.

 

Yup, thats what im thinking! I guess my question now is, is it worth converting it? Which I looked at the how to and I think I can do that myself, will have to practice soldering first tho lol Its been awhile since high school electronics class! Or should I just get a different ecu? I guess that the next thing im gonna have to look into is the chipping part also!

I can't solder to save my life. I'm always looking for the plug-n-play option for everything. If you feel confident then go for it. It's all if you think having VTEC is worth it.

 

It better be worth it! I got a lot of time and headache into this lsvtec! lol

Listen, if I bought a chipped p28 ecu, would I just be able to plug it in wire vtec and be done with it?

 

P28s are already VTEC ECUS. Then you'd have to get it socketted and chipped with a basemap for your setup.

 

VTEC is worth having on a DOHC motor. The install for the components isn't too bad, the hardest part is removing the old solder from the holes the components go in. The desoldering iron from Radioshack works great. Just squeeze the bulb, heat up the joint, release the bulb and it sucks up the molten solder.

And VTEC doesn't automatically work, it does need chipped also.

 

Thx guys, I need to figure out which path to take now! The guy at the performance shop in my area said that they could chip my ecu and put a basemap for me for $130! Thats a reasonable price but he hasnt said anything about having to convert my ecu first, which is what i just spent all morning with grumblemarc learning! He runs a reputable shop so i would expect he knows what he's doing!

 

I think Phearable offers chipping services for less than that.

 

So, I heard back from him. That price also covers the converting portion as well! I dont think thats bad, the bonus is he's only 20 mins away, I can just go do it and be done! Thx for the input!
