93 Del Sol problem: trans, clutch or something else?
I just bought a 93 Del Sol Si with 145k on it. The clutch is catching really high in the pedal travel so I figured it would need a new clutch. But it also has a hard time going into gear during high revs, mainly in 3rd and 4th. I thought this was also due to the clutch not engaging fully or something. If I drive it like a granny, it works ok.
I brought it to my mechanic since that is a job I can not confidently do in my garage and he said he felt the clutch is fine but that it may be something with the shift linkage and said the issue was likely internal so he'd have to split the case... which is going to cost a lot I am sure... (Now this is a mechanic I have used in the past with good success but I don't have any real loyalty to him). He is going to take a closer look at it tomorrow since he was overloaded today with other cars and I am hoping it is something simple that he can fix without rebuilding the trans.
I am just wondering if anyone out there has any ideas on what could be causing the issues I stated above with the car not wanting to go into gear at higher revs (and we are talking 5000-6500, not redline). It does not grind, it just simply feels like I am hitting a wall when trying to shift into 3rd during this situation.
I am really hoping I don't need a rebuild, I can't afford it right now. I'd rather just drive it until it strands me then look for a trans to swap in. Like I said above, I can drive it gently (no fun) but it does work.
Thanks

Mechanic said it was the syncrhos and trans needed a rebuild or a swap. Rebuild was a grand..., swap was $400 labor plus used trans.
I found another local honda shop that is going to help me with a used, newer trans for alot less...
I am going to have the other shop check it out though just to make sure it was diagnosed correctly.
