Default Practical HP limit for OEM viscous GS-R LSD?

Anyone know what kind of power these things will hold reliably? I've got a friend planning to push 500hp through one this summer. Personally I don't see it holding up to that kind of power very long, anyone here have some personal experience?

I doubt if a viscous LSD will handle 500 HP. I have seen many break at the axle neck when used in high HP vehicles.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Thanks James. I've seen that pic before, and I knew what could happen. I'm more concerned with at what point do they start to break like that. I've suggested to my friend that we take her spare open diff GS-R trans that needs a rebuild and swap the final drive into this one along with an mFactory LSD. If she breaks this diff the final drive will basically be good for scrap being 14 bolt and all.

I have a good friend that still runs his JDM SiR-G viscous equipped trans with a tad over 500hp. Has not broken yet with over 100 passes. He may be the golden one or just have the best luck ever?? But, it is holding up just fine. I guess a lot has to do with past use. You never know how it was used in Japan prior to its arrival??

Yeah true eh. This one has been in the same car for a good 5 years now. That car was always daily driven spring to fall, stored for the winter. For the most part it was driven hard. First 4 years it was just a stock GS-R swap. Last year it was boosted and making 320whp, not a lot of time on it though due to numerous issues, mostly in regards to the tune. It did see about a dozen passes at the track last year on slicks though and it's still holding, which honestly kinda surprised me. I have no idea how it was run in Japan. I will say though the trans has always shifted good, no grinds at all in the last 5 years.

Btw, any truth to these things basically turning into an open diff after about 100k?

Likely a "soft" clutch setup which is easier on parts.

On that note my friend's setup had a well worn XTD 6 puck last year when it was boosted, looked like it had been slipping a bit when the engine was pulled this winter. There's a 6 puck ACT clutch going in and something tells me that diff is gonna snap this summer.
