Any idea what would cause this. the car has a rough idle. Already replaced plugs, wired, distributor. Any help is much appreciated.
While it's running? Are you retarded or something? DO NOT DO THAT!
How about you tell everyone WHY you are pulling spark plugs in the fist place. Better list all the car details if you don't want your thread locked.

Some people do it to verify they are getting spark still; generally it's pulled from the dizzy side, NOT the actual plug side.
Though it is still a bad idea.

for all the noobs above that dont know OLD SKOOL WORK.
this method has been used for decades to determin the spark plug/lead at fault
that is causing the bad idle or miss
If your trying to fault find as to what one is the cause and it keeps dying
raise the idle a bit and try again
if you remove a lead and it stalls thats not the problem
restart with all leads on and move to the next lead
to know when you have a bad lead or plug it will keep running with minimal change
if after all 4 have been tested this way with out change your fault is else where
mmmm ask me how i know..race engine builder over 20yrs

theres more ways to check for spark than just unplugging the boot with the engine running. if that is what you were trying to get from doing that
