Youd need a new engine to get in running again

The easiest would be a d16y8

Any D or B series will be a straightforward swap. D's will drop in. OBD2 D's will drop in without rewiring.

96-98 OBD2A is diffrent from 99-00 OBD2B for a straight swap just get a 99-00 spec y8

Oh no, he might have to change two plugs

Wrona is technically correct, though.

The only real difference is the distributor, but he can just swap his old one over.

My engine in my 2000 Ex auto knocks pretty loudly on really cold start and knocks a little bit on 50 degrees starts. So i'm thinking that when mine blows, im going to try to get either another used d16y8 or a used d15b since those are really just straight forward replacements with a few modifications to wiring depending on what year engine you find.

Straight forward? Put in the exact same engine you're removing-D16Y8.
