Stripped valve cover bolts -- any easy fix?
I have a head where the 2 front valve cover bolts won't tighten. They are stripped on the head side. And if I do tap it where do I get new bolt to fit the new holes in the head.
Have you tried to see if the threads are just messed up? Can you run a tap down through it and maybe clean the threads up? If you have to tap them out just take the tap you used down to your local hardware store and match it up with the new bolts.
Same thing happened to me
Use an easy out to pull out the old snapped off bolts, then if the threads in the head are still good, use them
If not, go find a heli-coil kit that'll fit the bolts and use that.
As for new bolts, they can be found online, at parts stores, at the dealer, and maybe the junkyard
Take your pick but make sure to get new grommets for the bolts or else you'll leak oil from under the bolt heads

When you tapped, how did you deal with shavings going into the hole that is being tapped? Is that even an issue, or is that hole closed at the bottom where shavings in said hole would not enter the engine? I'm also worried about the little tab from the helicoil.
