Default OBD1 B18B1 into 2000 Honda Civic EX

Hey Everyone,

I currently drive a 2000 Honda Civic EX with a D16Y8. The motor is on it's last legs, so I've decided instead of swapping in another single cam, I was going to go B series. I've decided on the B18B1 as my motor of choice.

I've done a some research, but seem to be getting some criss-crossed answers on what I need to do in order to accomplish the swap. I've got a solid grasp on just about everything except for what I need to do to make the OBD1 motor run in the OBD2 car. As such, I'm coming to you guys for a little help. As a note, I would like to use an OBD1 ECU(Stock LS for now) in order to plan down the road.

1. The LS comes with the original harness, can I retain that? I've seen mention of having to use the D16Y8 harness.

2. ECU usage. I'm assuming if I run the LS harness, I can simply run it straight to the ECU. If I switch to the OBD2b harness, I'll have to get a jumper. Correct?

3. Dizzy/Alternator - What dizzy/alt do I run with which harness? Any modifications?

4. Sensors - Which sensors need to be modified with which harness?

Thanks for the help.

Trevor

the OBD1 wont be looking for alot of sensors.. so youll have alot of unplugged tails to wrap up under the IM

Not without a large amount of wiring. The LS is a two piece harness (engine plus dash) where the EX harness is one piece.

2. ECU usage. I'm assuming if I run the LS harness, I can simply run it straight to the ECU. If I switch to the OBD2b harness, I'll have to get a jumper. Correct?

See above. Use your engine harness and if you run an OBD1 ECU use a jumper

3. Dizzy/Alternator - What dizzy/alt do I run with which harness? Any modifications?

The dizzy/alternator will not be plug and play. You have a few options: 1)run the Y8 dizzy, it won't bolt up correctly but will work in pinch 2)Use a jumper harness and use the B18 dizzy 3)Rewire the OBD2 connector to OBD1. For the alternator you can use 1)An OBD2 integra alt 2)Use a jumper harness 3)Rewire the plug

4. Sensors - Which sensors need to be modified with which harness?

Will you be using the OBD1 ECU? If so it'll make it a lot easier. You won't have to bypass the crank fluctuation sensor, use the 2nd O2 or worry about all the OBD2 emissions pieces that will cause a check engine light. The differences in sensor are that the alternator won't plug in, the dizzy won't plug in, the intake air temp sensor won't plug in.Also you'll need to reuse your injectors as they are a different plug as well.
Thanks for the help.

You can't use the LS harness. You'll need to use the Civic harness and modify it slightly Injector plugs are different, the easy solution here is to just reuse the Y8 injectors since they're both 240CC anyway. Distributor, swap the CYP/CKP/TDC sensors from your Y8 distributor into the LS distributor housing, or buy a distributor for a '99 - '01 CR-V. Alternator, if they're both the same brand you can swap voltage regulators, otherwise get an OBD2 b-series alternator, an adapter harness or cut and splice the plug.

So what I've gathered is:

Use D16Y8 Harness.
OBD2B -> OBD1 Jumper Harness for ECU.
OBD1 B18 Dizzy w/ Jumper Harness
OBD1 B18 Alt w/ Jumper Harness OR OBD2 Integra Alt (Have to be LS? Or GSR/ITR ok as well? Or no difference?)
Use OBD2B injectors.

A couple other questions:

On the Intake Manifold, will the OBD1 work just fine? with no adjustments? If I switch to an ITR manifold? What do I do about the Intake Air temp Sensor?

Thanks so much for the help!

You can use any obd2 alternator. It will plug right up. I actually have and obd2 alternator if you're interested. Yes the stock manifold will work fine.

Take a look at this site. Katman made it, it's very useful. It will be overwhelming when you first read it, but read it a few times and you'll get it.

I have this swap into my EK and I get really poor gas mileage, around 250km per tank. Is the timing advanced or is it the O2 sensors?
