Quick ECU question, nothing complicated.
Would an ECU made for one engine work for another? My ECU is for a y8 vtec engine, but the block is a y7 non-vtec... My engine will rev up to where the vtec should kick in but wont go any farther. Is that because I have the wrong ECU for the wrong engine? My old Mechanic said it was a Crank Sensor issue, so I'm well aware it could be that too.
I'm planning a Mini-me swap and getting all my parts ordered. I was looking at ECUs and decided to check mine out real quick. It's a P2P-A84.
It's a '98 EX Coupe, the block says D16Y7.
I'm not a car guy but I love working with my hands and getting to know things better, which is why I bought this car. I just finished paying all my debts and I'm looking for a project.

Stock? No. The ECU follows the head. If the head is not VTEC you cannot use a VTEC ECU. However you CAN use a non-VTEC ECU on a VTEC engine. VTEC just will not ever engage.
Yea the Cel is on. The maintenance required is red also. I had a friend of mine who works at Honda as a mechanic, he hooked it up said that he got codes for the Crank Sensor and IACV. The car searches when idling so I'm sure that's right lol.
Honestly I don't know how to tell the difference between a y7 and y8 head, only that's what the block says.

The car hasn't changed since I got it. other than tires and regular basic maintenance. I know what the block says but didn't know about the ECU until I started researching what I needed and decided to check what I had. It doesn't have the stock air intake, either.
