95 cx - should I swap the engine or fix the head gasket?
hey guys I just picked up a 95 cx hatch for a few hundred, its runs but I think the head gasket is blown. It leaks oil and smokes from the lower part of the motor. Question is it worth it to swap another motor in it or should fix the gasket. And generally how much to swaps run
I would say fix it if its just the Head gasket and nothing else majorly wrong with the engine/transmission. Its really not that hard or expensive to replace a head gasket in these engines.
And as far as a swap goes it depends on what engine you wanna swap in really.

well. if you can do the work yourself, the Zidane6894 is right. but also if you just buy a nice d15b and throw it in there is wont be too expensive either. and youll be MaD JDm BRAH.
its seems to run fine I have seen rebuild d16y motors for around 900 on craigslist but I'm pretty new at this didn't want to drop the cash if its going to take more cash on top of the motor

And this has what to do with the head gasket going out, bad rings or any of the other problems the car is exhibiting? Doesn't sound like it was rebuilt recently if it even was.
Your route is pretty clear. Which of your options costs the least amount of money to follow through on? (Once again) This isn't a tech question. It's a finance question.

Well see the question was is it worth it to replace the head gasket on the car or just better to replace the whole thing. (Once again) thanks for your input.
And don't think replacing a headgasket is going to stop your smoking or oil leak issues. You have other problems that you haven't even diagnosed yet. Did you even do a leakdown or compression test on the engine? Nope. You're just guessing it's the headgasket then.
When our hatch engine was going out it was a matter of money which route would have been better to go with. If the engine swap is cheaper, then go with it, If repairing the current engine, with undiagnosed issues is cheaper, then do that.
Your choice is made infinitely easier if you are or are not going to do any of the work yourself.
Forget the head gasket, if you have any doubt of the condition of the engine then there's no point in investing in it. Buy an identical engine from a lower mileage civic and drop it in. Swapping in a different engine will cost you MUCH more money than you will originally anticipate, trust me.
I think it might be better to swap the motor out. I have no idea what other problems could arise and i would hate to throw money at an unreliable motor. I only want the car to be reliable, its for a 16 high school kid. Shouls i stay with the same type of motor or is there a better choice?

It's a Honda! They are all reliable if maintained properly! Replace like for like if you don't want any hassles with the swap/install.
