Something wrong with my tranny?
I posted here a while back to see if it was normal for the shifter to get a bit notchy (inconsistently - sometimes it was smooth as butter, other times it felt very scratchy) - i got many mixed responses; some said their shifters shifted the same and some said it shifted really smooth. Anyways, I took it to Acura twice for them to check out and the they insisted that it was normal. Since then, I've changed the tranny fluids (honda) and even switched to ES shifter bushings. The same problem persists (although the shifts are a bit more defined due to the bushings), but I've learned to live with it.
But it occured to me that I've grinded on the shift from 2nd to 3rd (on redline only) a couple times. Although this is unrelated to the rough shifting, and I am now beginning to suspect a defective tranny. I can pretty often reproduce the rough shifting feel if I downshift from 3rd to 2nd without double clutching while going at a decent speed. However it doesn't always do this.
Does this sound normal or there's definately something wrong with my tranny? By the way, I have 51k miles on my R (but it's been doing it since about 40k)... Luckily I have extended warranty, but Acura won't admit that this is not normal.

My transmission does the exact same thing, sometimes smooth as melted butter, sometimes as notchy as crunchy peanut butter.
As long as you don't have to force the gears in then you are allright. The synchro are slowly getting worn so it is normal they don't transfer as smootly as before.

Grinding between 2nd and 3rd at the redline (and between 1st and 2nd) is something alot of us have experienced. Synchros could be wearing down. It is NOT a defective tranny... maybe just a synchro or two need to be replaced.
As far as the 'moody' shifting. Sometimes mine is like 'buttah' sometimes it is knotchy, too. I suspect this has do to with temperature, humidity and warming up the car and especially the tranny. After I changed my tranny fluid (a few months ago), I started to warm up the car and the tranny for longer each time I started the car. I'd run through the gears with the clutch in (duh!) several times. I'd also let the car run for a few minutes before I shut it down. I have not had a grind in ANY gear since then. I'm shifting more carefully now, too, but I would have to say that my tranny seems much happier with some warming up. Similar to driving right after turning on the car, or warming up for a little bit!
