Default Shift.....Grind!!

Ls motor/B16 tranny.

When shifting at high rpms aggresively the tranny grinds but still goes into gear smoothly? I seem to be engaging the clutch fully when I am shifting and although I shift very fast, this didnt happen when I had a gsr hatch. So is the tranny going or is it me?

I know this is hard to tell by just reading, but it's kinda annoying and prohibits me from really geting on it at times.

Thanks

it sounds like your syncros. It is a typical problem. Try some gm synromesh first, and see if it fixes your problem. Search around this problem has been covered numerous times

betcha it's your snychros, and the more grinding you hear, the more damage is done....if you wait a little longer between shifts (i know, it sucks) it won't grind and your tranny (and wallet) will thank you

Your blocking rings are starting to go out if it grinds. It's not your synchros. Your synchronizer assembly should be fine still. You might need to replace the blocking rings which are part of the synchro assembly. It's easy thing to do if you have the right tools and a parts diagram of your tranny.

yo this is pretty weird but it worked for me......

i thought my old cars syncros were fucked up bc it grinded going into 3rd, but when i got another car i had the same problem so i figured it had to be the way i shifted.. okay the weird part.. when i used to shift i kind of grabbed the shifter low, like on the side of the **** and pushed it in but it always grinded going into 3rd, but now i keep my hand on top of the shifter and put a little pressure on the top pushing down towards the boot a little bit and theres no grinding, no matter how fast i shift or how high the revs (i swear its the truth)

so become conscious of where ur hand is and see if keeping it on the top of the shifter and putting some weight on top of it will stop ur grinding problem

i hope it works out for u, grinding used to bug the **** out of me. pm me or something and tell me if it works.. if it doesnt, to fix the syncros its like a 1500 dollar job.. i also heard about some tranny syncromesh that slows down the grinding process alittle

Good luck man.

Thanks man. Yea exactly my thought.....just hate waiting that extra second, but yea rather not tear the tranny. Getting an R motor or rx7 twin turbo in the fall.....not sure yet. Friends got an mr2 with close to 300whp and the turbo bug is bitting.

Thanks man......Yea I tried that, but it doesnt make a difference, but I have noticed that when my short *** isnt big pimpin with the seat farther back and my tip toes are just reaching the clutch to the floor, that it doesnt grind in second and less in third....lol

Thanks guys for the positive responses.....shoulda searched, just sometimes my first instinct is to post.

Thanks

for the syncrhos to test third go from 1st directly to third even slowely if it still grinds its probably your synchros, with an rx7 you may have this problem as well tho, ( im looking for an fd too ) because the 5th gear synchro is chronically weak, so do the same test when you look at those but going from 3rd to 5th ^^ gl whichever.

same thing happened to me....when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd some double clutching and easy shifting...I'm guessing made the syncrhos go back in there place because it never happened again...

Ok Guys.....just want to post one more thing on the thread. I tried shifting from 1st to 3rd slowly and no grinds at all. But could it be something else like the clutch not engaging properly or fully? I talked to a friend with a skunk2 shifter and says he has no problems on a 00' gsr, so that kinda rules out the skunk2 shifter theory...right?. Just wondering if it could be something other than syncros cause i did the test and it seems that checked fine.

....just would hate to think I am shifting too fast!!

it seriously just seems like the synchros, if your going to get an rx7 check out http://www.rx7club.com, same rules apply there as here but they have alot of good info already posted up.

Well I got a friend to drive it today in between my classes. He has a gsr and said when he had an ls 3rd gear would do the same thing, but his gsr has never done this. So I am wondering that b/c its not a preformance motor, thats probably why the tranny is a little notchy, that and combined with high miles.
