Default Timing affect performance

How much timing affect my D16Z6? It used to run really shitty. When it was cold, I couldn't throw it in drive. I adjusted the timing cuz it was way off, but sometimes it still dies. so what I wanna know is how much would 2 degrees in advance effect the cars performance?

Because the ignition timing was way off. I had to advance it in order for the ignition timing to be right

Is this engine stock? Why would the ignition timing be way off? You're saying you cannot set both to stock specs at the same time?

Yes it is stock. Well I'm assuming the guy that owned before me, had no idea what he was doing, so he set the timing wrong. I can set the ignition timing dead on the marker, then with a timing light, move the dial to 16 degrees, and the TDC mark is where it should be as well.

That would be a Frequently Asked Question wouldn't it? You never listed your car specs. This thread is likely to get locked.

2* is not 'way off'. Stock tolerance is +/-2*. Sounds like you have another issue. I would assume you adjusted the timing with a timing light? Did you jump the service connector under the dash and set timing then? What's your spark look like? Are you getting any CEL codes?

If your car would run worse when put into drive, might want to check idle rpm's and maybe adjust. What other symptoms do you have. Running crappy is not a symptom we can really help you diagnose, need more specifics like what it's actually doing.
