Default h22 problem w/ fuel pump? and h2b questions

I was driving in 5th gear at about 3k rpms when the exhaust got loud and deep and felt like their was no power in the motor. I looked at the motor didn't see anything out of place. If I press the gas pedal about 1/4 of the way its almost normal but when I push harder it gets loud, loses power and sometimes backfires. Did the fuel pump give out?

Also I was thinking of going h2b. Haven't done much research yet but what are the benefits of it? I'm not racing qrtr miles so I don't want short gears what's a good tranny to go with?

I am doing research so I don't need links just personal opinions. Thanks

A bad fuel pump is not generally going to cause the engine to back fire.

Check the ignition and mechanical timings.

Also, how old are the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor? Have you inspected them?

Any CEL codes?

I only said the pump cuz that's what some dude said at autozone... I've had the car for a year now and haven't changed any spark plugs or wires or anything but filters and fluids so ill check those. No cel codes tho. Another thing tho is the timing has been slightly off the whole time I'm sure that could be an issue too

Does the CEL work?

Are you saying that the ignition timing cannot be set to spec with a timing gun? If so, that potentially points to a mechanical timing problem, possibly one tooth off on the timing belt.

The cel should work its never came on so I'm not positive... and with the timing I'm not sure what u mean but the way I was showed how to fix it was by twisting the distributor till it sounded right...

Test for whether CEL works:
If you turn the key from off to the ON(II) position, does the CEL turn on and then off after 2 seconds?

You are talking about the ignition timing. If it cannot be set properly, check the mechanical timing, that it is whether the cam and crank are properly synchronized at TDC1 by the timing belt.
This is for the B16A2 engine, but you get the point:

Okay so they cel does work it turned on the off 2 seconds later. I pulled the spark plugs out to see if they were burnt out. They looked good but were soaked in fuel. Now I know that isn't good but why would they have fuel on em and what kind of problem would that be?
