Metal In Oil Pan Please View! Pics inside
Idk if im posting in the right place as this is going to be my first post on hondatech. But i need serious help!
Heres My story a couple months back. i made the mistake of installing auto flywheel bolts on my 97 b18c1 and well after a night at the track and a short lived drive home the flywheel and crank pulley both decided to part there own ways.
so after a month at my boys machine shop and spending all my savings i had it rebuilt.
-New used b18c1 crankshaft (micropolished mint)
-new oem p72 rods (arp rod bolts torqued properly and honed)
-new rs machine ao p73 81.00 mm pistons/wristpins/rings
-standard acl race bearings/rod/main/thrust from real street in orlando
-arp headstuds-rod bolts-pressure plate/flywheel bolts
-oem itr cams
-new oem itr dual valve springs
-shaved head
-block hone
-everything was within spec and hot tanked all brand new seals/gaskets from honda
well i have around 1400 miles on it right now and on the 4th oil change castrol 5-30 k&n filter and last night i wasnt crossing over into vtec so i got worried and babyed it home removed the vtec solenoid and the filter was full of silver metal shavings... O.O my heart dropped but i didnt think the worse becouse i know break in leaves behind some metal well today after letting it sit all ngiht i dropped the oil pan and well as you can see in the pic theres alot of ****ing metal particles along with what seems to be like ground up really fine silver powder along the bottom of the windage tray.. im/pissed/scared/and broke
i know this cant be normal and i want opinion befor i go attempting to tear the swap back apart with no money to put it back together

I dont think its my valve train as much as the fact i just went outside and dropped my windage tray and found 2 thrust washers just soaking it up one all bent and eating up and the toher one mainly intact.... wtfff! posting pics now

you see the pic thats exactly how they sat there and everything is tight as **** no play what so ever i watched over him at the machine shop as he torqued things and went over everything just to make sure aswell im dumbfounded
i have never in my life, ever, ever, ever, heard of thrust washers just falling out, like your main cap would have to fall off for them to come out and land in your pan.
they were laying in the windage tray i just went out again and theres no slack in any of the main cap bolts im waiting on my boy to come over to remove the main caps to see wtf happened since he put it together
that whole engine has to be ripped apart, you gotta check whats wearing prematurely, and check the clearances over again, because something was NOT done properly.
well we dropped the girdle and the bearings are scared up pretty bad inside the journals
looks to be crank walk... from what we got no clue so i started ripping the swap out gana wait til the morning to pull it the rest of the way out.. fml.

Damn that is a first for me...and I have had my share or bearing issues. Did you have the block/caps/girdle checked with an align hone? Something is WAAY off to cause that to happen. I'm wondering if the thrust washers fell out on install and went un-noticed and that's where this "crank walk" you speak of is coming from.
Could tyhe three main caps tied into the journal have been installed backwards? Don't know if that is even possible but it is the only way I can see the thrust washers falling out since the no. 4 main cap is a bit wider to hold them in.
im not even sure ive never touched a b series bottom end/opened it up until now well i pulled it out monday morning and its sitting at the machine shop yay for another month or so down without a vehichle :/
from one man on a budget to another. i feel for you. sorry to see things go so sour. hopfully you can get some new bearings and toss her back together with no other damage.
good luck
good luck
From my experience this looks like one of the washers must have fallen during assembly taht is why you probably have one washer in goods shape and the other all twisted, got twisted during it´s course to the oil pan. Than again that is what it looks like to me.
crank walk my ***. something had to be assembled wrong. it is physically impossible for those bearings to fall out, chillin in the windage tray when you pulled it off. Looks like what "terbear4god" stated above, thrusts in backwards. the non loaded side when clutch pushed in is prolly the linguini lookin one. when you pushed the clutch in while running, the bearing on the non loaded side, the beveled end of the bearing might have slipped by the block groove, and bye bye. Good luck with next build.
well he told me he would take care of it hopefully he does so soon in the meanwhile im looking to trade my tan s2k seats for a longblock i cant keep depending on people for rides il keep you guys posted on what happens here in the future
