98 Civic - Fluctuating/high engine temperature after heater/cooling system work
Hi, I had some work done from a mechanic such as heater control valve, smoe hoses, water outlet cover, and radiator and cap. Also new coolant he put the green coolant in. It looks to me ever since the guage has been moving as high as the picture shows and then goes back down and up again then down. It happens randomly and the a/c isnt on and the heat works. The radiator and resivor levels are fine. The mechanic told me its normal for honadas to do this but the car has never done this before. It hasn't gone higher then the picture shows but its suppose to be on the bottom line of that little picture in the middle of the guage whatever its called. Anyone know what could be the problem. Thanks

Does it do that idle or all the time? Should not go past 1/2 way up, typically the fan will come on the cool it down?
Did he do the thermostat??? if so maybe wrong temp, or aftermarket one.
You said water outlet cover, the thermostat housing cover?

It worked good for about 2 weeks ago he did it. Then now im getting this problem. The last thing he did was the radiator. The fan is coming on. When the guage is going up the fan stays on but isnt cooling it down. Tongiht i got home and was idling in the driveway and the guage went up higher and it went up so high that i just shut it off im not taking any chances. This shop told me that all hondas do this but i know thats bs and idk what to do the guy is telling me it will be more money to look at it. I just gave this retard 600 bucks for all this work. What should i do. It was happening when i was driving too but happens more when im in idle.
Please check the new picture. It would of kept going up if i didnt turn the car off. dont worry about the check engine light as far as i know last time i checked it it was an old code that i know about that has nothing to do with this. Also the thermostat was replaced about 9 months ago with a stant premium 195 degree and never had a problem when i installed it so i doubt its that. What do i do I have a feeling im gonna break down soon. The water outlet cover is on the front of the block

As for taking it back, you spent all that money, tell him there is a problem and fix if the the thermostat does not do it, if you charged it, fill a claim with the credit card company.
wow this mechanic is so incompetent. no cars should ever be above half line. i have never seen a normal car above half.
Either way, get it fixed asap or you will increase engine wear and even blow a head gasket. Hondas do not respond well to overheats...just remember that. my friends civic overheated due to a blown hose and ever since that occasion, his car overheats at idle and has to add coolant every month.
Did he install a oem thermostat? some third party thermostat do not open until it gets too hot.

how would i know if it might be a waterpump too. Im ready to call my bank up cuz of this moron. Looks like everyone in america is a scammer and only cares about money. What happen to the days it was about the customer first.
he was telling me that it could be the sender unit getting sensitive.

It is about 22 bucks retail.
You might also try bleeding the system.
If the fan comes on and the temp is running up like that after putting in a thermostat, you might have to start checking to see if the headgasket is going.
They checked the heat gasket and said it was good. They ran some test overnight about 2 months ago and put somthing in eacdh cylinder to check for water and they said it was good.
Air. In. The. System.
Did we at least check that?
And get an OEM thermostat. That's easy enough to change out your self.
But I would have returned the car to them the minute I had problems.
Also I suggest you learn more about your car. $250 to change a radiator is outrageous. I told my wife how to do it and she did the job in less than 40 minutes.

No dammit. If it comes on it's doing it's job. Bleed the air out of the system.

he has my money though. I'd have to dispute it if he wont fix the problem. The problem aint fixed. He thinks im an idiot. I know a little about cars i know the guage isnt suppose to jump around. Looks like most people in auto mechanics are a fraud. I've never seen an honest shop or mechanic so far.
