Default Probability of damaged head after timing belt break

Picked up a pretty decent 95 Si with original d16z6 for 100 bucks! The person i got it from said that she was driving in town, maybe 40-45 mph when she heard a small knock, then the car shut off. She then tried to start once more and it wouldn't turn over so just stopped trying. The car has been sitting maybe 2 years covered. When I got the car home, i went straight for the timing belt and what do i see...broken timing belt.

I know the z6 is an interference motor, but whats the probability of the valves getting messed up from that speed? I haven't had time to take the head off due to some crazy weather, but as soon as i get an opportunity to do it i will. Should i try getting the timing corrected or just scrap it and go for a swap?

Could go either way. Install a timing belt and then compression test the cylinders.

There's a good chance it's bad. Like Ron said, throw a new belt on, test it and find out. If it's bad, you're likely looking at valves and guides in at least one cylinder if not 2. If it's apart and it has a lot of miles, maybe go ahead and rebuild the whole thing. You definitely got a heck of a deal. The bottom end is still probably good.

yea i will try that tomorrow hopefully. It has 65,xxx miles on it, lucky me! I kinda want to keep the z6 in it with it being that low of miles. Working on my ek h22 at the moment so really don't want to spend a lot of time on it until i finish it. Hopefully the valves aren't bad and a timing belt and water pump is all thats needed. wish me luck.

45mph....?
Id say your buying a head..... I broke one at 25 mph, and went home, threw a new belt on and drove it another 100k miles...
Belts are cheap....give it a try.

However, 2 years of sitting....Id be worried about other stuff, seals/gaskets..yada yada

Speed doesn't or RPM doesn't have much bearing on weather you will bend valves or not. I broke one at around 60mph, didn't bend valves (was on a D15B7 though) For what it's worth I know guys that have bend valves on B-series engines at idle when breaking a belt and other guys that broke a belt at 8 grand and didn't. There doesn't seem to be any good way to predict the outcome. I'd put a belt on it and try it.

installed the timing belt and replaced the water pump, tried to start and started went dead. Swapped with a known good one and everything is good to go. I have a small vacuum leak at the tb/im which is getting fixed tonight. another stock, unmolested EG is alive and well!

Will take pics as soon as the weather is decent

one way to check is to take off the valve cover and turn over the cam and see if any of them stay down the tolerances are too tight for them to move if they are bent
