Default eg civic lx 4dr auto - Build or swap brother's motor while he's in basic training?

I want to build my brother a motor while he is in basic training and ait.
I found a eg civic lx 4dr automatic that I think would be perfect.
I know of a few names that would be good for parts, but I don't want to waste money if I can get something cheaper that will preform just as well--or better.

I know I'd like to find good...
-suspension
-exhaust system
-possibly a stereo system.
-cams
-intake manifold
-header...I guess that's part of the exhaust system.
-head bolts....but I think i want to order him arp.

I think I want to go with a Cometic head gasket.
I think I've got a block, head, tranny, and pistons and rods.

I know this is really broad, but I get to feeling annoying when i'm asking the same guy questions about car stuff.

Thanks!

I would get the b18 from a junkyard, rebuild the bottom and I can buy a vtec head and tranny.

Honestly I'd at least try to look around and find a 5 speed car. You never mentioned anything about transmission but it'll have to be swapped to 5 speed as well.

I agree with this. 5speed swaps are easy enough if you have the parts laying around or a donor car, but starting off with a manual would be much easier. If it's his money and he's not a car person, would he even enjoy the car? Just curious

Well, im buying a turbo charged, b16 hf crx. He has fun driving it. Im not putting a turbo on his car, and it feels like rebuilding a d series is hardly worth it.

The auto is a good deal, and clean. I didnt think the switch to 5spd would be super difficult.

I'm also trying to woo him with the ideas of a motor swap and aftermarket parts so that he doesn't buy a motorcycle.

It's not really, you just need all the right parts.

Im sure I could order the clutch and flywheel online, and pick up the pedal at a junk yard. im not sure if I should get the shift linkage online or at the junkyard.

And don't forget about the clutch master cylinder with reservoir, clutch line to slave cylinder and the actual slave cylinder.
