H22A1 cuts out at 6500 rpms with VTEC?
What's going on here? A friend just put a STOCK H22A1 in his Prelude VTEC.
i.e. this is a plug and play engine, stock OBDII P13 ECU and everything. Post install he can only rev to 6500 rpms. Normally I would say this is limp mode, but there is no code, and VTEC still works. Well up to 6500 rpms, then it hits a fuel cut/rev limit. Any ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong, an H22a1 motor is OBD I and H22a4 motors are OBD II...You may just need an P13 OBD I ecu

Check your oil levels and make sure that is straight.. Other than that if you are not getting any CEL codes then you may have a bad ecu on your hands..
Oops also I almost forgot, make sure the car is fully warmed up because V-tec will not engage if both the oil pressure and temperature is not right.. Hence no codes.. And what you might be hearing is your secondaries opening but not vtec

. The ECU is fine it was on the other car with the same engine working beautifully the day before. The VTEC works, we the diff between secondaries and VTEC, just droppped new oil in.Basically something isn;t plugged in or something broke, but no codes so I am dumbfounded.
Never said you were dumb, but sometimes even the smallest things can be overlooked... Which wiring harness did you use. And if I am to understand correctly
what did you swap the engine from and what is it in now?

It was 96 to 96. I think I figured it out https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=301225
For some strange reason the gears on the VSS were different sizes. Same assembly different size gears....so when the engines came out the VSS stayed on the car so we wouldn't have to cut the PS lines.
One car the VSS popped right in, the other it would go in at all. Thus the one that is too large went with the other engine, thus the smaller gear wheel must not be spinning...

Very bizarre but we tracked down the problem. Apparently whoever wired the V-AFC funked something up. When we cut the V-AFC and reconnected the wires it works perfectly!
I wasn't there for the wiring but he said there was a white/yellow wire being used, which is bizarre because that should be the ECM backup power wire. I don't know how it was being used, but I know that it shouldn't be involved in wiring a V-AFC! Anyways revs to redline now.
