d series blocks the same?
got a 91 civ ex with a thrown rod through the block (all stock) and am wondering if the d block from an 96-98 sohc vtec motor would work? ive messed with b series so long now ive forgot alot of easy d series stuff lol thx
So u got the the a6 motor in right now and if u blew a rod chances r u probably bent the valves too. But don't get the y8 y7 96-98 blocks throw rods as well. Lack of oil.
You act like every oil pump fails; the oil pumps are different. I think you are misinformed... It has more to do with the oiling of the crankshaft journals. I can assure you, the problem has a lot more to do with the weak connecting rods/bolts in ALL of the D-series engines.
the main problem the 96-01 d series engines have are they have 1 oiling port per journal, so when the owner lets the oil levels run low they spin bearings easyer. SUPPOSEDLY the y series have less flowing oil pumps as well but they can be shimmed easily. yes you can use a z6 or a6 crank and oil pump on a y block, the crank is direct swap, however the oil pump has the dip stick comming out of it so you'd have to find a new way to check the oil level
D16Y7 and D16Y8 blocks only have the one oiling port and the oil pumps aren't as great. Honestly they aren't terrible if you're just going to drive it stock.
As far as what blocks are the same...
D15B1, D15B2, D15B7, D15B8, JDM D15B (VTEC models won't have oil squirter though)
D16A6, D16Z6 (No oil squirter like the A6), ZC SOHC and late ZC DOHC
D15Z1 is unique (weird deck height, long rods), and so is the D15B6 (pencil crank journals and thin rods).
D15Ax blocks (Which are late EW blocks) are similar to the D16A1, D16A8 and D16A9 but have smaller crank journals and a shorter stroke crank. With D15Bx pistons you can bolt a DOHC D16A1, D16A8 or D16A9 head on a D15Ax or EWx block.
That's pretty much it. There are some oddball D series that we didn't get in the states (D13/D14 etc.) but you generally don't run across those
If you had a D16A6 you can use a D16Y7/D16Y8 block, you'll have to pop an oil squirter in the D16Y8 block though! Otherwise it'll over-oil the head and probably run low on oil pressure, which could lead the ill-fated bottom end to do what it is somewhat known for -- spin a bearing or throw a rod.
Personally if you're just going to leave it stock, though, ANY D15Bx/D16 block will be fine.
