are all d-series head gaskets interchangeable?

Unless you count the DOHC ZC then yes.

Some are better than others though. The OEM gasket for the D15B7 is a matted fiber material and it is not all that durable. Stick with the MLS (multi layer steel) gaskets.

If you're replacing a blown gasket, get the head surfaced if the motor overheated. Warpage over like .003" across the surface of the head will keep the gasket from sealing.

thanks, im asking because i bought an engine off a kid. the block is a z6 but im not sure about the head. it has the y8 intake manifold on it. could anyone tell me how to distinguish the difference between the z6 head and the y8 head?

Yep, the number should be stamped on the head near the coolant outlet to the radiator, right above the exhaust ports.
Either P2P for the D16Y8 or P08 for the D16Z6

Stick with the OEM three layer gasket, especially if you have to mill the head or the block, or else your compression will be too high, you'll have to run premium gas/retard the timing, etc etc XP
Use Fel-Pro or OEM (OEM preferred)
