Default Tube notcher info??

Hallo guys,

I got one question, maybe someone can answer it for me

What's inside the "box" through which the notcher shaft slides and rotates? Is there some kind of bearing or something?

Thanks

I'm just a bit confused about that, cause I want to make my own notcher... I called bearing shop today and a guy on the phone told me that there is no bearing that rotates and also moves forwars/backwards...

The polished shaft just slides forward/backward through the bearing.

So there is a roller bearing which aids in rotation, but shaft just slides forwards/backwards through it, is that correct? Also is there somekind of special lubrication for that bearing or should I put a bit oil on shaft one in a while????

Correct. The actual rollers only spin when you rotate the shaft.

Not daily, but a little bit of oil on the shaft once in awhile is a good idea. Also, if your building it, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pack some grease in the roller bearing before installing them.

If you use a bearing that needs grease won't it just attract shavings/dust . Why not just use a sealed bearing.

What is your basic idea for building this? I was actually thinking about doing something similar.

It is called a needle bearing. You can purchase them from Mcmaster. Just make sure you choose one for your specified RPM and load.

Yeah, I found a picture of it in the "bearing box", e-mailed it to the salesman and he told me that it is needle bearing Also he gave me product numbers for 1" and 1.125" shaft and prices Thats nice!

The only question left - is there something in between those bearings - I believe there is a bearing on both ends of the "bearing box", but whats in between? Is there a surface which alsto tourches the shaft or just a gap between bearings and only bearing touch the shaft???

Hope someone can make this clear for me

Thanks everyone!!!!

Yeah, the one which we have in the work (which is also DIY unit) also has a bushing with grease in the middle of it, with a little screw on top to feed the grease in Also works fine, but I believe that bearings should work better

I've also heard the term "Linear motion bearing" being tossed around with notchers... :S
