DIY: Rattle Can Engine Bay [pics/56k]
My brother is currently building a motor for his car, and doing a wire tuck. So I went over and we painted the bay.

Down to the metal

First coat of self etching bare metal primer

Sprayed darker automotive primer today

Some of the stuff we picked up

He wanted black, so I figured this was a good choice

Not so great. Coat is very uneven/mottled. Albeit, for a rattle can job, not terrible but definitely not the best.
I have tried that primer before and have never gotten good results. Let us know how it stands up.

Looks OK now, but that clear is going to be very soft and not resistant to any automotive fluids. Hydraulic fluids will eat right through that in no time...
I have worked with paints for a long time, and Rust-Oleum is mainly just for stuff in the home (not automotive).

Yeah, I guess I'll see how it turns out after we clean it up and buff it. I'll probably wax the bay before the motor goes in as well. Regardless, I think this paint will protect much better than the hack spray job from the previous owner (paint ran and came off with brake clean). He just spray bombed parts, no primer, with dirt in the paint...
It will protect temporarily, but I wouldn't be surprised if this paint too came off with brake fluid and ect. Urethane or a true activated acrylic enamel are much better for engine bays (well, much better for cars in general.)

It's not really a yes or no answer...time and environment are the major factors here. It will protect it for a while, and look good for a while. Once it gets dirty and you try to clean it it will just get more and more scratched and dull. Engine fluids will eat through it rather quickly as well. So it may look good for a year or so, but it will deteriorate and not hold up near as well as 2-part automotive paint (for example). Furthermore, if you used something like POR15 in there it would probably look perfect for the next 20 years....
atta-boi for the hard work. considering what you guy's have to work with budget and location i give you two thumbs up for the effort.
being that you used paint stripper, something that you might want to do is spray the inside of your frame rails and lower tie bar of the core support with body wax.
thats alot of work good luck with the rest of your project

After the paint stripper was used everything was rinsed down and de-greased with simple green, then rinsed down again and dried, including the subframe. We didn't wax it, we just masked it off with plastic tarp beforehand. Good tip though.
excellent job imo for a cheap alternative if your not gonna dump thousands in the car, you did it properly. Rustoleum primer in a can is a bitch to work with compared to duplicolor, I never use it. Another alternative would be to use duplicolor paint shop that you can spray on with a spray gun rather then the rattle cans but it should hold up just fine as long as you take care of it.
