Fuel Guage Problem
So I replaced my fuel pump recently and now when I get to quarter tank on the guage the car runs out of gas. Before the pump was replaced, the guage worked fine. Anyone know if I can reset it or do I need a new sending unit or what the case may be?
If the low-fuel light isn't coming on, it's not the fuel gauge. The problem is that the new pump is either at a different angle, or has the pickup at a different height...
I put an aftermarket in mine and had to do some adjustments - finally re-using the old filter/pickup that attaches to the lower end of the pump to get it to turn out the same (position/depth/angle). The one that came with it would have turned out something like yours... it didn't sit the same at all.

Wait, what???
The fuel pump has nothing to do with fuel level, [unless the installation of it is somehow interfering with the fuel mete] the pump and meter are two differant units... #1 and #26

Or the meter was damaged when gas tank was dropped to replace fuel pump. 94

If the pickup on the pump (square item sandwitched in between numbers 9 and 23 in the diagram) isn't at the same height from the bottom of the tank (or at an odd angle) - the pickup will cease to draw fuel at a different level in the tank --
which is how the fuel pump install can cause you to 'run out' when the gauge says 1/4.. even if the gauge hasn't changed at all.
When I installed my pump, also aftermarket, the pickup was quite different and probably would have done something similar had I used it.

You got it. In my case, I thought the pump was a decent one, but the pickup wasn't close and didn't keep the same angle (which makes the pickup parallel with and close to the bottom of the tank) that the original pickup did. So if he had a similar aftermarket pump, that could be it.
Doesn't rule out the fuel gauge sending unit as a possibility - but I do think the pickup position is more likely given my experience.
In the end - only opinion. ; ' )

Thanks guys for the input. This new pump that I installed had a smaller sock on it compared to the stock sock that was on the original pump. So maybe the sock isn't long enough to reach the bottom of the tank. Damn it.
