Default Lets Talk Vynl Wraps

Well i didnt see a thread in here about vynl wraps so figured id make one! Im still researching the process but it seems like a nice cheaper alternative to paint. I have a weekend car "del sol" that is about to have some bodywork done in preparation for paint or vynl "either way it needs the work".

Any ideas if the average vynl material will hold onto primer without issues? After the bodywork I wanted to seal or prime the car to keep from rust developing on bare metal and such.

Now, what im wondering about is what is the "commonly used/best" option for type of vynl to use. Ive seen alot of wraps with 3M & Orracle products. Are there pro's & con's to either one?

My preference for color is going to be "Satin" Black. This in its own has been hard to track down thus far. I see alot of "Matte/Flat" options however i dont think a "mugen inspired del sol" could pull off the flat black well so I was opting for the "Satin" Black which has a very low key gloss but overall a flat sustained look.

As for wrapping I was planning on removing nearly all the panels minus the doors and rear quarters to complete this project.

I was wondering if its recommended to wrap to the underside of the panels or if most just trim very closely to the seals and such. Id imagine wrapping the panels to the underside would be the "better" way to go except removing the vynl would take additional time and efforts later down the road.

Anyways, post your thoughts, experiences, recommendations and such.

Ill post pics of progress over the next 4 weeks. I have not "yet" ordered the materials as Im waiting for the bodywork to be completed.

Thanks

Oracal 970RA is the vehicle wrap you want. It's the best material for an automotive application. With everyone wanting $3k for paint and body work and me just not being that into my Si... I'll most likely be going this route.

The 3m version is their dinoc series (might just be the CF stuff, but I'm pretty sure it's for all finishes).

Thanks, I also just ordered some more Oracal samples last night.

-Satin Black
-Gloss Black
-Matte Blue "really liking the images i saw of this so far but wanna see it in person"
-Matte Green "dosnt appeal to me but was just a sample..who knows"

Im picking up a new hood tomorrow night and hoping the samples arrive tomorrow so I can do this in my spare time this weekend and snap some pics for all colors on the hood so make my decision. It will most likely be between satin black, matte black, and blue matte

Yea I love my car and would love a fresh captiva blue pearl paint job but im a perfectionist which means id probably spend 5k after all said and done in paint especially sense id want to replace all the del sol seals which are rather expensive...figured id wrap now..replace the seals 1 at a time as i go along and put more love into the engine work & finishing up the turbo setup. The supercharger will hold me over until the motor and turbo setup is done.

I got the house brand satin black vynl but havnt wrapped anything just yet. A little weary to this kind of vynl because it has "NO" adhesive backing and is applied w/ a watery solution......Its a great color but we will see. Gonna wrap a spare fender with it on sunday/monday and see how it looks.

I wouldn't use those. The ones with the adhesive backing. like the type I used, are placeable so that you can peel them back up and reposition it many times until you get it right. The type you have needs to be constantly re-wetted. If your water based solution dries up then you're screwed.

I agree 100%.

It offers long-term removability from painted surfaces and does not require an overlaminate. White and Black also offered in a matte finish.

I wrapped my integra using oracal gloss black. It is very forgiving if you need to remove it from a panel and reapply it. I would recommend leaving as many panels attached to the car as it will give you resistance when applying the vinyl, cause you will need to stretch it and keep it taught to keep out wrinkles.
