Default gsr turbo problem!

well i just got a 97 gsr. the guy said it needed injectors, a fuel pump, and then i could get it tuned. i bought some rc650cc injectors a walbro 255 fuel pump.. the guys chipped my ecu with chrome. they said they set it at 15 psi.. was running good and when they shifted into third the car just shut off.. they said they got it started and it was pouring smoke. so I'm guessing its a head gasket or my sleeve got ****ed.. any ideas on what to do first? i checked my dipstick and the oil looked fine but i opened my oil cap and i can see milky oil under my cams... they said oil was spraying out of the vent on the valve cover.. I'm fix in to go start pulling stuff off and was wondering what i should do first? thanks guys

Head gasket?and you shouldn't have been boosting like that with no tune

+1, also shouldn't have with stock head bolts. When you replace the head gasket, use ARP head studs.

the WG is what determines boost. at 15psi you can not use the oem MAP sensor either. on top of that 15psi doesn't tell us much without the lb/min of the turbo.

i have never understood why people always use "that guy" and slap on parts, break stuff, spend thousands and still don't understand what's going on

to turbocharge a gsr correctly it will cost you about $4000 in parts and you NEED someone who knows how to tune the car correctly. just generally speaking 15psi on most common turbos is more than a gsr can handle on pump gas. the tune would have to be perfect and multiple dyno runs checking for knock would have to be done. timing in the map with pump gas has its limits

stronger bolts and what not can help but the most common reason for a "blown" HG on a GSR is too much timing or too much boost for the given build. the b18c uses an MLS gasket which almost never "blows" what happens is either the deck of the block distorts or the combustion is so turbulent that you pop a hole in a piston, stretch fasteners {bolts} or light up an exhaust valve.

as for what to do? pull the motor and do one of two things

1. buy jdm gsr and install, drive stock

2. rebuild or jdm motor, keep the turbo and spend cash on making sure it's tuned right and the proper parts are installed

anyway you stack this you're going to be in it a minimum of $2000 and it cold climb as high as $7000 depending on what you do

tear the engine out, pull the head and see what failed. best case you'll be shaving the block, head and doing a new HG. worst case you'll be rebuilding or installing another engine. what turbo are you using anyway?

i got the car back from the tuner and now it won't start at all.. I'm guessing i don't have enough compression.. i guess I'm gonna do a compression check tomorrow and see what the deal is.

Dude don't keep trying to get it started if your hg is blown and the coolant is already mixed in with the oil. Tear that thing down, now.

Yea it should be ok to check compression, but I wouldn't keep trying to start it after that. First thing I would do is take the head off, and take a straight edge to the head and block to check for warpage.

a 60 trim at 15lbs should make 350-380whp. very difficult to tune on pump gas, would be much better on e85. detonation is my main suspect. that turbo at 10lbs would be much easier to do on pump

sounds like your "tuner" blew your engine because he didnt know what he was doing

so do i also agree

you can't run a 60 trim on a gsr on pump at 15lbs and use any sort of timing in the map, it's just dangerous. there is a reason why people hell bent on pump gas and 400whp use 9:1 pistons. a stock 10:1 gsr can run 15lbs on a 60trim all day on e85 but even then the tune has to be spot on. someone "learning" on your car is exactly why this post exists

the tuner at this point appears to be the most likely reason you have a blown engine
