transmission toast??
99 accord 4cyl auto 230,000 miles approx.
So I think my transmission is finally going. If I just start the car and go I can drive in first gear anything else the the rpms just rev up then eventually after crusing in first gear, everything else start shifting...little sluggish, but it will go through the gears with a little slippage between 3rd and 4th.
If I let the car warm up for 20-30 minutes, all gears work right away, little slippage still, but they all work, in town and freeway speeds. I do have to drive it easy though.
When I slow down to a stop sign or light, just before I come to a complete stop, I feel a "clunk" in the transmission most of the time.
I really didnt want to have transmission issues, but I guess its standard....just did the head and timing belts...and wouldnt you know it....the transmission.
Have had the car since 2005 and has been a great car, have always done all the maintenance...guess its just that time.
Time for a rebuild? Any ideas on cost?
Is a used one an option? Cost?
cost will determine wether or not its worth it to keep the car or be done with it.
Thanks for any advice.

Not to state the obvious, but you have checked the fluid level in the trans? Also, try to replace the filter and fluid. It would be a good place to start before rebuilding the transmission. Do you have any error codes?
I dunno that that transmission is toast just yet.. I have a 98' that has been doing basically the exact same symptoms you've been explaining for the past two years. lol.
If Im in D4 I will get a dunk when coming up to a stop light decelerating alot of times. Like it's slamming back down into gear. But if I drive it in D3 it never happens.
If I don't let the car warm up for like 15-20 minutes it will surge trying to come out of first. If I let it warm up properly though and drive it easy it drives like a dream. Just take it easy on that transmission man.. You may find it lasting a while longer.
I think one thing I did do to make it last awhile was change the fluid(drain an fill) when I first got it. But twice after that about 30,000 miles apart I did the drain/fill X3 driving a 100 miles or so between fillls. Try that out too. Drain the fluid, fill it up, drive a 100 miles, then drain again - Times 3 . You absolutely must use Honda Genuine Auto Transmission Fluid. They have a new one out called DW1. Get it from your dealer or online.

yeah, i have checked the fluid and I have always changed it when due....the 3x after a few hundered miles thing. I must say, I didnt know there was a filter to change...I had always just heard to the drain and refill 3 times. I do use the honda atf. even added the lucas stuff this last time just because it seemed to be acting up a little. seemed to help for a while.
It is getting worse though. Afraid I may have to do a rebuild...just so expensive. How hard is it to pull an automatic yourself? Im sure I could save some labor cost by pulling it myself then taking just the tranny to a shop...not sure how much it would save...might not be worth it.

On Honda ATs there aren't any readily servicable filters to change. There is a valve body filter, but the only way to get to it would be to tear down the transmission. The '98-02s there are several external solenoids and pressure sensors. However I have not found anything on how to troubleshoot the '98-'02 Accord AT.
There is also a shift selector sensor on the right side cover, verify this is reading correctly for the selected gear. If the PCM 'thinks' you are attempting to maintain only 1st gear that may be the issue.
Since it seems to be temperature related it may be a faulty sensor somewhere.
