Default How to check engine mount on manual car?

Well I am starting to think that my mounts are done. How can I check them on a manual car? Visually they do not look ripped but how can I be sure? All the shifting trough the gears like on an automatic is out...

Stand so you can see the engine (not in front in case something happens) and have a friend rev the engine. If it rocks a lot then the mounts are bad.

Symptoms of a bad mount are a loud popping when you first accelerate and possibly bad idle or mis-fires.

You could also stand to the side and have someone apply the E brake, and then put it in 1st gear and give it a couple light shots of throttle. With a little bit of load it will be more apparent if something is wrong. If you see the engine rock and the mount moves more than you like, replace it. If they are really bad they will knock and make a noise. This is because the rubber has deteriorated and you are hearing metal to metal contact.

lazlong,
Just wondering. How does a bad engine mount cause a bad idle or a misfire?

The engine rattling in the mount will interfere with the knock sensor. Usually it only happens when the rubber in the mount is completely, or almost completely, gone and it's hitting metal. I did see it happen with rubber still in there one time in my brother's Corolla though. It's pretty rare (I've only seen it 3 times) but, it does happen.

OK I understand that it causes other issues due to vibrations and such. Loose wires, worn connectors, rubbing components, etc, etc...... I thought maybe there was something else.

The knock sensor issue could certainly be an issue with the 98+ VTEC Accords.
