2012 Civic Si (K24)
Hey guys... I recently bought a new Si as a daily driver for my wife and to a lesser extent, myself (it has 1500 miles now). I didn't see a forum for the newest generation, so I decided to post my question here: Why does the K24 hold onto revs so much/long???... if you drive with near WOT and press the clutch, it hold onto revs, esp if you are at 4,000 rpms or higher... it takes forever for it to drop (and I'm used to a stock flywheel... still stock in the prelude)... seems like the fact that it is still holding onto revs when you engage the next gear could lead to more clutch wear... I know the 06-11 Sis had the k20, but I am hoping someone here can help... otherwise I can jump over to some TSX forums. Thanks!
I do have to admit I kinda question passing on a <$9,000 dollar 5th gen prelude (2000) with 87,000 original miles to get the civic... I like it, but it doesn't quite feel as pure as my old 4th gen lude... the civic is more refined, but the suspension is not as honest. I wish the shifter and e-brake were swapped too... maybe the japanese designed it with their RHD in mind
Also... what mods other than oil pump will need to be done to get this beast revving a little higher??? Overall I really like it... nice powerband (though VTEC does feel limited coming from a dynotuned h22a...)... the low end, and esp. 4-5K (just pre vtec) really feels strong for a stock 4-banger.
I have often read though the forums here, but I haven't been very active as my only Honda until recently has been my 1992 honda prelude with an eCtuned h22a/m2b4 swap with a few mods:http://www.preludezone.com/members-r...2-1992-si.html
civic thread from preludezone: We broke it in really easy... nothing above 4,000 rpms for 1,000 miles... oil changed to synthetic at 1,300 miles and since we have hit vtec some, though it is a little anticlimactic in the k24...http://www.preludezone.com/auto-show...n-prelude.html

...or the closest we will ever come... 2012 civic si k24  6 spd LSD  Torque ,,,, drove it off the lot with 3 miles on the ODO... breaking her in easy...
We wrecked my wife's Ford Focus ST (pics here). So, I just got this car as a DD for both my wife and me (she is not able to work due to health issues, but still has to take the car some days each week for appointments, etc...)... I will still drive the lude a time or two a week.
more pics @ above link...

This car was a pain in the *** to get... we ordered one in sunburst orange pearl Aug. 1... was supposed to be here by the end of the month... then they said a couple more weeks MAX... wasn't here (it was more complicated than this, but not worth typing)... we waited and waited and the eventually they tell us they are recalling that color and the blue to to pigment issues and pealing paint... they had a black scheduled for delivery, so we said... WE'LL TAKE IT!!!... was here within a couple weeks after that. (they also have a white coupe at the dealer we signed at, but we preferred the sedan and the black...)

More then likely, the horrible rev hang is ecu realted just like it was with the 06-11 civic's(I too came from older/better honda's and miss cable throttle
) The lack of vtec "feel" is likely due to the lack of vtec on the exhaust side
Also the oil pump design is VERY similar to the 06-11 si pump, meaning it should be safe to 8600rpm, though u probably shouldnt be revving your new big 2.4 that high lol

Thanks. That makes sense... I didn't even think about the drive-by-wire being the culprit... this rev thing might be my biggest issue with the car, as it interferes with my skipping gears (maybe a bad idea, but with the torque and the close ratio I often skip a gear or two when I get to speed... got used to that in the h22a). I didn't notice that issue when I test drove a 2007 Si, but the dealer was in the car with me and told me to "get on it" so I didn't pause to see if the revs were hanging... felt great on the upper end, but the k24 is going to be nicer for most the driving I do. I used to hit Vtec all the time when I got my h22a... it remains tempting and I find myself winding it up routinely.
coming from the h22a, I think I understand both the desire for that low-mid-range power and the screaming high-revs honda made famous... I hope as we begin to drive the k24 a little harder it pleases on the high end as well as the low... I knew it only had intake side Vtec, but I was not aware of the dramatic impact that would have... I think they added the new vtec sensor because you now need it to know you hit VTAK!!!!
as to revving... yeah, I agree!... no plans to rev too high (not that the stock limiter would allow it), esp. looking at dyno charts of the powerband; it would be pretty pointless unless it came with other mods... as you can tell we plan on being pretty good to this car... we broke it in really easy. No plans to modify for quite some time (if at all... the prelude can become more of a project now...). I was just curious about what it would entail (something I should probably research myself...
)
Thanks again for the response... I think you hit the nail on the head... (maybe that 5th gen lude is looking better and better... lol)

I have my 12 si since the end of july and I still can't get used to that annoying rev hang.
I do hope someone comes up with a fix other than buying an expensive tune, why can't honda see this will effect clutch life, but then again they don't care about a part that is not covered under the warranty.
I love my si, it is quick and fun to drive.

^Ditto... Have you heard about the 2013 facelift???... I hope I don't end up being pissed....

I'm sure tons of aftermarket companies will be releasing parts for this car. Simple bolt-ons will do wonders for that motor and once Hondata releases Flashpro (the most important mod) for it hopefully they'll have features that will fix the rev hang problem like it did with the 8th gen Si's. Have fun modding your new car and keep us updated!

Sounds good. Thanks to you both. I kinda regret not looking at that 5th gen prelude... such a beautiful car, and I love my 4th gen... but the wife really wanted the civic... Don't get me wrong, I like it... but at $23,000 I cringe a bit (and don't plan on modding anytime soon)... that would have paid for a low mileage 5th gen and gone a long way both 'ludes.
