Default Where to aim the timing light

Ok, I dont wanna sound like a idiot but I've never used a timing light before. In the discription in the book it says to just aim it at the crank pulley or bell housing depending on where the timing marks are. Do I need to take my timing belt cover off to expose the actual arrow and crank gear or do I just aim it at the crank pulley? It's a DOHC ZC.

No, the cover stays on. You should be able to see the marks on the outer crank pulley.

Just so you know there is a tab on the timing cover itself that you line up the middle mark out of the 3 timing marks. The one off to the side is for TDC, which can also be found without removing the timing cover.
