Default 1991 STD - Intermittent Starting Problem

Searched aaaaaall over the place and I still haven't figured this one out...

I have a 1991 STD HB, d15b1. Thing starts fine MOST of the time.

First start of the day is always fine.
If I go out, start it up and run around for a while, then shut it off and try to start it again, it sometimes won't start. The starter always cranks, but it doesn't fire. I usually sit for a few minutes, then try starting it again. Usually, it takes about 2-5 minutes and a few tries, but it eventually does start.

Any guidance is muuuuuch appreciated.

Mines doing the same thing right now,
Im thinking its the igniter inside the dizzy.
Because also if i put the car under heavy load, (5th under 2000rmp) and floor it, it studders off and on until it gets above 3.

Does your do this?

Almost sounds like a hot start.....mine would do that. I'd drive it to the store to get a pack of cigarettes, turn it off. Then when I'd go to jump back in the car it wouldnt start. I'd have to wait ten minutes give or take. Try tapping on your main relay when you have that problem again. Also, when it happens again try push starting it. If it starts that way atleast you'll know you're getting spark and fuel.

Nope - mine doesn't stutter or hesitate at all - revs up just fine.

I'll have to give that a shot - I just loooove how inconsistent it is .

Solution for you was main relay, I take it?
And your car JUST had a hot start issue, no other randomly-shut-off-while-driving stuff?

I second the main relay as being the problem. I've had ignitors go out before, and when they wouldn't start, they would give a code 15 on the ecu. Do you have any CELs?

If it is the main relay, you can resolder the solder joints or just buy a new one for around $50. You should be able to hear it click when you turn the key.

No CELs. Should it click when I turn the key all the time, or should it only click/not click when it won't start?

when you turn the key to two all the idiot lights come on and if you stare at the check engine light you will hear a slight hum and then right when the CEL goes off the main relay clicks. You should hear that. If you do not then its your Main relay.

I was having this problem for a bit, and every time i start the car i click it on, wait to hear the fuel pump, then i start it.
Then i dizzy went out on me, the igniter exploded... literally.

so i figured that fixed the problem. Then it did it again last night outside of a nice restraunt with my girl all dolled up... yea that's embarrassing... but i herd the main relay clicking... What else could be the problem?

most like likely it's the relay. It's a common problem, should just get a new oem unit and go from there.
