98 lx header/cat help
Alright let's examine an LX exhaust set-up vs. an EX set-up and see if this is helpful to you...
1998 Civic LX (and DX/CX for that matter) uses the same catalytic converter built into the exhaust manifold. (HX does the same, but with different part numbers). A 1998 LX set-up:

So immediately you should notice the positioning of the second o2 sensor - it's at the bottom of the exhaust manifold/cat converter, and thus it's wiring is part of the engine harness.
Now let's examine the 1998 EX set-up for comparison:

Now this picture shows the exhaust piping for both the LX (top) and EX (bottom):

You should also now notice where the secondary o2 sensor (#41) is for the EX - it's in the converter, which is under the vehicle. This will also show you that it's wiring harness is not part of the engine harness. This wiring for the second o2 sensor goes through the floorboard of the car (thus the rubber grommet built into the wiring) , and under the passenger front seat where it plugs into the body harness, which makes its way to the ECU.
Also noteworthy is the difference in exhaust LENGTHS since the EX has a converter taking up some if its exhaust b-pipe (#18) length.
"So what does all this mean for me putting header on my LX???
Well it means if you want to put a header (all headers for the 96-00 Civic SOHC will be marketed/built for the EX model) on your LX you will need the following:
- Header for 96-00 Civic EX
- Catalytic converter (or test pipe...don't recommend it though) for 96-00 EX
- Secondary o2 sensor for 96-00 Civic EX
- ***You will have to build/alter wiring harness for secondary o2 sensor to allow it to be plugged in under the car where the new converter will be as opposed to under the hood like the old secondary sensor was in he LX manifold/converter***
- ***You will need to have your LX exhaust B-pipe either shortened and a flange added at a muffler shop, or but an EX B-pipe***
Does this answer your question? It should.
