If my cylinder 1 is tdc which direction should my rotor be facing

It should be facing the #1 spark plug lead, bottom left when looking towards distributor.

Firing order is, [clockwise] 1342, cylinders are 4321 from left to right. 94

If you're standing at the passenger fender, looking into the engine compartment, the #1 cylinder on the distributor is at BOTTOM LEFT.

With the #1 cylinder at TDC compression, the distributor rotor should be lined up with that bottom-left terminal.

Going CLOCKWISE from the #1 terminal, the next terminal is #3, then next #4, then next #2, and then you're back at #1 again.

Doh!!! TheRealTegger is correct it is the bottom left, [just like my 94] my Haynes shows it as top left and does not explain the line drawing of distributor is rotated 90 degrees clockwise. 94

Can incorrect ignition timing cause fluctuating idle?

No. That's normally an air leak.

Any common spot to get an air leak because I can't figure out the idle problem
